The Romantic Rhine (ロマンティック・ライン)

Our third day in Germany was Monday, on which tourists have a nuisance as the public facilities like museums tend to be closed. We wouldn't have bothered if we had been in Cologne on Monday because it has so many tourist attractions than museums and galleries. Yet, we visited another place as we thought it might be slightly stressful to walking there around considering where we could or couldn't see. Besides, we had a place to go while the weather was still fine.


It was the Middle Rhine known as “the romantic Rhine.” The Rhine gorge between Bingen (Bingen am Rhine) and Bonn was famous for wonderful wine, and it is also well known for outstanding scenic area consists of old towns and castles full of myths and folk tales. The upper half from Bingen to Koblenz is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more than 40 castles and fortresses from the Middle Ages and many wine-villages, thus a large number of tourists visit this area.

Tourists can enjoy a river cruise operated by KD (Köln-Düsseldorfer Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt) Line between Mainz and Cologne. German Rail Pass holders are able to be on board without paying extra fee as the pass is also covered the KD line's cruises. As it takes half a day if you are on board the entire section, which takes only 1.5 hour by train, though. The most popular one is going on board at Rüdesheim am Rhein, which is a wine-village on opposite side of Bingen, and get off at Koblenz. It is a 4-hour cruise, but it takes 2 more hours if you go up the stream. The cruise is time-consuming, so that it isn't easy to enjoy the journey on a boat and visit ruins or towns at the same time if you don't have enough time.

I read a lot of guidebooks and essays about the Middle Rhine while I was planning the journey. Even though every town seemed worth visiting, we didn't have time to visit all of them. I couldn't decide, but my friend's request was very simple; to enjoy the cruise, and to try some wine. Influenced by his humble wish, I reconsidered my plan by giving priority to the Rhine cruise and wine tasting.

What I finally decided was to go up a part of the upper Middle Rhine from Koblenz, and visit a small wine village called Bacharach. As I couldn't ignore the lower middle, though, I also expected to go there another day by train. Good weather is crucial for the river cruise, so we made up our mind to go on board on our third day in Germany.Probably, you have some question about our plan, for example, why we go up the stream even though we knew it took much time, or why we choose Bacharach from many wine villages in the region. Certainly, they have positive reasons and I'm going to tell you about them later on this blog.

さて、日は変わって月曜日。博物館や美術館といった公共施設が休館になるため、都市へ観光に来た旅行者にとっては非常に迷惑な曜日です。宿泊したケルンには、博物館・美術館以外にも見どころはたくさんあったので、それほど面倒ではなかったかもしれませんが、それを考慮に入れながら歩き回るのもストレスなので、再び遠出することにしました。それに、天気が崩れないうちにどうしても行っておきたいところがもう一つあったのです。

それが「ロマンティック・ライン」と呼ばれるライン川中流域。ビンゲン(Bingen am Rhein)からボン(Bonn)までのライン渓谷は、名高いワインの産地として、また各種の伝説が残された町や古城の残る景勝地として知られています。特にビンゲンからコブレンツまでの渓谷中流上部は、中世からある40以上の城や要塞、それにたくさんのワイン生産に関わる村と共に、ユネスコの世界遺産に指定され、旅行者にも人気の観光スポットなっています。

マインツ(Mainz)からケルン(Köln)までの区間は、KD (Köln-Düsseldorfer Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt) Lineの遊覧船が運航しており、観光客はライン川クルーズを堪能できます。ジャーマンレイルパスの適用範囲にはこのKD Lineのクルーズ含まれているので、ハスを持っている人は別料金を払わずに乗船できます。全区間は列車でなら1時間半程度で移動できる距離ですが、船に乗ると12時間近くかかります。最も人気なのはビンゲンの対岸に位置する、ワイン醸造で知られる町リューデスハイム(Rüdesheim am Rhein)から乗船し、コブレンツで下船するものです。船はこの区間を4時間程度で下りますが、川の流れに逆らって上ると所要時間はこれより2時間ほど長くなります。船旅は時間がかかるので、時間に余裕がない観光をすると、クルーズを楽しみながらいくつかの古城や町を散策するのは容易なことではありません。

旅行の計画中、この辺について書かれた旅行記やガイドブックを何冊も読みました。読めば読むほど、どの町も行くだけの価値があるように思えてきた反面、それを全部実現させるほどの時間はありません。どうしようか決めかねていたのですが、友人のリクエストはといえば、船で移動して、ワインを飲むという、非常にシンプルなものでした。それで彼の謙虚な望みに触発され、ライン川クルーズとワインテイスティングを優先して計画を練り直した次第です。

最終的に決定した計画は、コブレンツから乗船してライン川中流上部の一部をクルーズし、バッハラッハ(Bacharach)というワインでも知られる小さな町に立寄るというものでした。とはいえ、中流下部の地域への思いも捨てきれず、別の日に列車で行けるかと期待もしてみたりして。船旅なら天気が良くないと、ということで、滞在3日目に船に乗ることにしました。おそらくブログを読んで下さっている方の中には、どうして時間がかかるのを承知で川を上ったのか、どうして数あるワインの町からバッハラッハを選んだのかなど、この計画にいくつか疑問があるのではないかと思います。もちろん、きちんとした前向きな理由があるわけで、それについてはこれから少しずつお話していこうと思います。
