The paddle steamer Goethe (蒸気船ゲーテ)
A time table of KD's Rhine Cruise is available on the company's website. It changes twice a year depending of high or low season. According to the website, KD has 15 ships and passengers and we basically don't see which boat they take. Yet the one called Goethe, obviously which was named after an eighteen-century genius that German people are proud, seemed different. I didn't know what exactly she was, but it grabbed my attention as it looked very special.
When I saw high-season time table, I found the Goethe departed Koblenz at 9 o'clock in the morning and headed to Rüdesheim taking 6 hours. It goes back later in the day, but it arrives in Koblenz at 8 o'clock in the evening. As we stayed in Cologne, getting it on from Koblenz in the morning is more realistic than going on board from the upstream in the late afternoon. In other words, we chose a longer cruise against the river flow in order to get on a particular boat.
The boat was bigger and tidier than I imagined. In fact, the Goethe is a steam paddler originally built in 1913, and the vessel is the oldest of all boats owned by KD. It has 2 decks which is capable of 500 passengers. Rooms in decks are eating section, so that passengers need to order something if you seat somewhere inside the deck. If you just enjoy riverside scenery without spending extra money, you would be better to stay on the sundeck.
The morning that we were on board was cloudy. Although I put on as many as I could, they seemed not enough to protect me from the cold wind through the river. It was going to be a long cruise. I willingly took a seat and saw the outside view through the windows eating and drinking. There were a small number of passengers from Koblenz, and we could get any seats we wanted. We chose front side, and asked a waiter two sets of breakfast.
The boat departed Koblenz on time. Shortly after floating down the river, she slowly sailed to the upstream against the flow. Suddenly, music, the beginning of Schuman's “Rhenish” was played through speaker and the announcement of the Rhine cruise continued after the music. Even though I was looking forward to listen to this composition on the Rhine, the melody didn't match the feeling at the moment since it was very quiet morning.
KDの遊覧船の時刻表はウェブサイトに掲載されており、時刻と本数はハイシーズンとそうでない時で異なるため、年に2回変わります。この会社では現在、15隻の船を持っているようですが、基本的にはその時刻にどの船が運航するのかは掲載されていません。ただしゲーテ(Goethe)という船（明らかに18世紀の文豪でドイツ人の誇りでもあるあのゲーテから名前をとったのでしょう）だけは例外で、いつ運航するのかわかるようになっていました。それがどういう船なのか良く分かってはいなかったのですが、他と違う扱いのものは気になるものです。
時刻表には、ゲーテ号は朝9時にコブレンツを出発して6時間かけてリューデスハイムまで行くとありました。船はその日のうちに引き返しますが、コブレンツに到着するのは夜8時過ぎです。ケルンに滞在していた私達にとっては、夕方に上流から乗船してライン下りを楽しむよりも、朝のうちにコブレンツから乗船する方がより現実的でした。つまり、川の流れに逆らってわざわざ長時間の船旅をすることにしたのは、ひとえにこの船に乗るためだったのです。
実際にコブレンツで目にした船は、想像以上に立派でした。実はゲーテ号というのは1913年に製造された外輪式蒸気船で、KD所有の船の中でも最も古いものだったのです。乗客用のスペースは2層になっていて、500人が収容できるようになっています。中はすべて飲食スペースになっており、「船内で席につく＝飲食する」ということになります。景色だけを楽しみたいだけで、飲食で余計なお金を使いたくないという場合は、外のデッキで時間を過ごせば良いのです。
私達がこの旅を決行した朝は、曇りがちでとても寒く、冷たい風も吹いていました。私もできる限りの防寒対策を取っていたものの、川を通る風の寒さを防ぐには十分とは言えなさそうでした。それに長い船旅になるのは分かっています。それよりも暖かな船内で食事を取りながら外の景色を楽しむ方を選び、席に着くことにしました。コブレンツから出発する船だったので、どのテーブルも空いていました。私達は前の方の席を選び、ウェイターに朝食のセットを注文しました。
船は時間通り、9時に動き出しました。出発する時、船は川の流れに押されて少し後退し、すぐにゆっくりと流れに逆らって上流へと進んでいきました。突然、船内のスピーカーからシューマンの交響曲第3番『ライン』の第一楽章が聞こえてきて、それに続いてラインクルーズの船内アナウンスが流れます。ライン川の上でこの曲を聴くのを少し楽しみにしてはいたのものの、あまりに静かな朝だったせいか、船が動き出したばかりのこの状況ではあまり雰囲気に合わない感じがしました。
朝食の温かいコーヒーとパンが体を温め、ホッとした気分になります。まだ空はどんよりとした灰色で、外にいる人達もジャケットのジッパーやボタンを上まで上げ、寒そうにしていました。外にいるよりも席に座っていたほうが間違いなく快適だと思われました。
