Sunny Sunday for visiting a castle (晴れた日曜日に)
It was Burg Eltz that we decided to go in the 2nd day of our journey.
It was a medieval castle located at a mountainous area near a small town called Münstermaifeld, where is 100 km south from Cologne. I hadn't thought of going to the Moselle riverfront at first, but the description of Rick Steves' Germany 2011
(his series are my bible of travelling Europe) roused me to visit this castle. A travel writer going around Europe many times mentions it as “my favorite castle in all of Europe”, then why shouldn't we go to there?
It has a little problem, though. It seemed me it wasn't easy to get there from Cologne by train because the castle is far from the nearest station. As I don't drive, I had asked my friend to get an international driver's permit in order to drive in Germany, but we were unwilling to drive a hired car where we were not familiar.
The easiest way to the castle without driving a car is taking a walk from the nearest station Moselkern, a small town along the Moselle. A tricky thing is, however, walking time on guidebooks were so different that I didn't know which was true. For example, the official website of Burg Eltz and Lonely Planet Germany
write that it takes 35 minutes from Ringelsteiner Mühle car park in Moselkern, but Rick Steves' Germany 2011 tells 70 minutes from the station, and what is more, a Japanese popular guidebook says 1.5 hour.
Supposing that it took 1.5 hour and the road were steep, I had thought that it might be hard to make a round trip. “If only something took us to the castle at least...,” just when I thought so, I recognized the information about a bus to the castle. Certainly as guidebooks wrote, the transport association Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Mosel operates a bus between 2 train stations on the Moselle via Burg Eltz. It runs 5 times a day on Saturday, Sunday and holiday between March and October.
It was good news, but we had one option of the date as we arrived on Saturday and left on following Saturday. We assumed it would be tough to make a short trip a day after a long flight and the plan of hiking would depend on the weather. Then, we had told that we discussed whether we went or not after arriving in Cologne. We arrivedThen we considered. We arrived at a hotel earlier than I had expected, I hadn't got tired yet and he said the weather would be fine. Then, we finally decided to visit Burg Eltz by train and bus, and went back on foot walking through a hiking route to Moselkern.

そもそも旅行の計画を立て始めた当初はモーゼル河畔に行くつもりもなかったのだけれど、『Rick Steves' Germany』（このアメリカのガイドブックシリーズはヨーロッパ旅行の際の私のバイブルなのです）で取り上げられていたことで行ってみたいと思い始めたのでした。ヨーロッパ各国を旅した著者に“ヨーロッパの城の中で一番のお気に入り”と言い切られては、見ないわけにはいかないでしょう。
問題は城までのアクセスでした。城が最寄り駅から遠く、列車で行くのは大変そうだったのです。私は運転をしないので、友人に国際運転免許証は取ってもらっていたのですが、レンタカーで慣れない場所を運転する（正しくはしてもらう）のも気が進みません。
車の運転をせずに城まで行く方法で一番気軽なのが、モーゼル河畔のモーゼルケルン（Moselkern、列車でのアナウンスを聞く限りでは「モーゼルカーン」と書いた方が音に近い感じがするのだけれど）という駅から、徒歩で向かうというものでした。ですが紛らわしいことに、ガイドブックによってこの所要時間がかなり違っていて、どれが本当なのかがわからないのです。例えばエルツ城のウェブサイトと『Lonely Planet Germany
』ではモーゼルケルンにあるRingelsteiner Mühleという駐車場から35分とありましたが、『Rick Steves' Germany
』では駅から70分、『地球の歩き方 ドイツ
』だと1時間30分、といった具合です。
1時間30分かかる上に道も険しいと仮定すると、往復で徒歩というのは辛いかもしれない。「せめてどちらかだけでも省く手段はないものかしら」と考えていたところ、城へ行くバスがあるということを知ったのです。調べてみるとガイドブックに書かれている通り、Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Moselという会社が、エルツ城を経由してモーゼル川沿いの二つの鉄道駅の間を走っていました。1日5本、3月～10月の間の土日祝日だけの運行です。
これ自体はありがたい情報だったのですが、土曜日到着で次の土曜に帰国という私達のスケジュールからすると、行けるのは滞在2日目しかありません。長時間のフライトの翌日に遠出というのは厳しいだろうし、ハイキングの計画も天候によって変わってきます。そんなわけで私達は、現地に着いてから行くかどうかを決めよう、と話していたのです。着いてみたら思っていたよりも早くホテルに着いたし、まだそれほど疲れてもいません。友人によれば、翌日は晴れるとのこと。それならエルツ城まで行ってみようじゃない、ということになりました。行きは列車とバスに乗って、帰りはモーゼルケルンまでのハイキングコースを歩いて。
