Morning Cologne Central Station (ケルン中央駅の朝)

We decided to stay in Cologne on the 4th day since we travelled little further over the past 2 days. Yet, we went to the Cologne Central Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof) station soon after leaving our hotel room in order to fetch our breakfast. We had bought bread and coffee at a bakery in the station building for the past 2 days, so that it had become a part of our daily routine.

I'm not sure if I have told you or not, there are many shops, cafés and restaurants in the station besides the DB service counter, kiosk and toilet. It also has two small supermarkets, which was especially fascinating to me. Bakeries were the most crowded among them in the morning because they buy some breads and coffee on their way. It was true that the scent of freshly-baked bread inevitably drew attention and made me feel eat something even though I wasn't hungry enough to have breakfast. One of these bakeries that has some outlets in the city sold not only typical German bread such as rye bread, pretzels and Berliners, but also many other pastries and sandwiches. They tasted good, so did coffee.

The problem was that I couldn't have a nice cup of tea. Actually, it was not only in this bakery, but also other cafes and restaurants during my stay in Germany. I think it is because served water weren't hot enough to brew black tea. Talking about drinks, I concluded that people would better to choose beer, white wine (red wine is good, though) and coffee in Germany, but tea (as it isn't good) and mineral water (as it is relatively expensive).

Getting back to what I wrote about the station, I found many things that I hadn't noticed in the past 3 days. I was particularly interested in what I saw at a sausage shop in front of the bakery. When I saw the shop, a middle-aged business man was eating a sausage. He also had a bread roll, but it was small and shorter than the sausage. It never seemed to be a hot dog. He pinched the very end of that greasy sausage with his thumb and forefinger and brought it to his mouth. It was too long to bear in two fingers, so that he hanged the sausage on the mouth at first, and tuned up to eat. Personally, I don't want to touch hot greasy objects using my fingers especially without any towelettes. From Japanese point of view, people should need something to pick (for example a pick, chopsticks or plastic fork) the sausage instead of our hands. Yet, the guy didn't seem to care. He sucked his fingers, wiped them with a dry napkin, wiped again with his waistcoat (!), and left the shop. I know I'm fastidious, but I wouldn't be able to follow the way he did.

I also noticed that DB's small information booth under the stair to the platforms. A station staff stayed there with his/her laptop for helping passengers. There are many types of DB service counter in the station. If you go to the largest counter, your questions and requests would be almost answered, but people usually wait their turns for long time as it is very crowded. If you simply ask the question about your destination or timetable, you'd better to ask an information desk in the entrance or the staff standing at the station.

And yet, certain amount of people queued or gathered at the desk all the time while I was staying in Cologne. Such sceneries made me realised that large amount of people used the station and many of them seemed visitors who didn't know much about their destination.

ドイツ到着早々遠出ばかりしていたので、滞在4日目はケルンの町を見て回ることにしました。ですがホテルを出て最初に向かった先は駅。なぜかというと、ケルンに滞在してから駅のパン屋でコーヒーやパンを買うのが日課になっていたからです。

言い忘れていましたが、ケルン中央駅のプラットフォームの下はショッピングモールになっていて、ドイツ鉄道(DB)のサービスカウンターや公衆トイレの他に、ブティック、飲食店、小規模な（私の大好きな）スーパーなど、様々な店舗がまとまってあります。そのの中で、朝のうちに最も賑わっているのがパン屋です。駅を利用する人達がパンやコーヒーを買っていくのですね。確かに焼き立てのパンの匂いには引きつけられ、朝起きぬけでそれほどお腹が空いていなくても、なんとなく何か食べてみたい気にさせられるのです。市内にいくつか店舗を持つパン屋も駅に入っていましたが、そこにはライ麦パンやプレッツェルやベルリーナー（中にジャムの入ったドーナツ）のようなドイツ風なパン以外にも、デニッシュやサンドイッチのような惣菜パンも揃っていました。どのパンも、そこで出すコーヒーも結構美味しかったと記憶しています。

唯一不服だったのは、紅茶が今一つだったこと。これはこのパン屋に限らず、滞在中に入った多くのカフェやレストランでも同様で、おそらく原因は、お茶を淹れるためのお湯の温度が非常に低いためだと思われます。個人的な感想ですがドイツで飲み物を頼む時は、ビールか白ワイン（まあ、赤も良いけれど）かコーヒーにした方が良いと思います。お伝えした通り、紅茶は多くの場合不味いし、ミネラルウォーターは相対的に高いので。

駅の様子について話を戻すと、この日の朝になって気付いたこともたくさんありました。特に気になったのは、パン屋の前にあったソーセージスタンドでの出来事です。店の方に目を向けたとき、折しもそこで立ってソーセージを食べている会社員風の中年男性がいました。パンも頼んでいたのですが、ロールパンサイズなためソーセージよりはるかに小さく、ホットドッグのような感じではありません。そのオジサンはまず親指と人差し指で脂でベトベトのソーセージの端をつまんで持ち上げました。ですが長いソーセージはたった二本の指で支えられる重さではなかったようで、それを顔の前にぶら下げて、その下から口に運んでいたのです。個人的にはウェットティッシュなしで脂っぽいものを指で掴むのは極力避けたいしし、日本人的な観点からすれば、店の方で楊枝や箸、プレスチック製のフォークといったものを用意して欲しいと思うものです。ですが、そのオジサンは全く気にしないようで、食べ終わった後、脂で汚れた指をなぶり、紙ナプキンで拭いた後、更に自分の服にこすりつけ（！）、店を後にしたのでした。自分がちょっと神経質なのはわかるけれど、あれは絶対に真似できない...。

DBの案内係の人がプラットフォームの下の通路にもいるということにも気が付きました。彼らはノートPCを確認しながら案内をしていましたが、ここ以外にも様々な種類のサービスカウンターがありました。最も大きいカウンターはスタッフも多く、様々な質問やチケット購入等に対応してくれますが、常に混雑しており大分待たされます。行先や時刻を確認したい程度だったら大聖堂側にある駅構内の案内所がクやプラットフォーム側にいるスタッフに聞くと良いかもしれません。

とはいえ、私が滞在していた間は、こうした小さな案内所でさえも人が列を作って待っていたり、スタッフの周りを囲んでいたりするのをしょっちゅう見かけたものです。駅の利用者が多いということ、その中に観光客や出張中のビジネスマンなど、地元以外の人が多く含まれてるということを再認識させられる光景でした。
