from Frankfurt to Cologne (フランクフルトからケルンへ)

I arrived at the Frankfurt Airport (Flughafen Frankfurt am Main) shortly before 14:00 local time, which was about 30 minutes ahead of the schedule. Time difference between Japan and Tokyo is 7 hours during summer time, it turns out we were on board over 11 hours.

This airport is located southwest of Frankfurt am Main, the largest financial centre in continental Europe which is “on” (“an” in German and which is written “am” when it contract with masculine dative articles) River Main. It is not only as a major international airport in Germany, also the third busiest airport in Europe. Perhaps as it is huge, I saw the airport staff riding cars and bicycles inside the passenger terminal. One of these cars had signs indicating that all passengers were able to share a ride.

We had two options to go to our destination Cologne from the airport. The first option is using a domestic flight to the Cologne Bonn Airport which is nearly 15 km far from Cologne city centre. Yet, the second option, using a train is more accessible as it goes to Cologne Central Station.

A high-speed train called Intercity Express (ICE) offered by German national railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) connects between Frankfurt Airport and Cologne in approximately 1 hour. Lufthansa offers smooth transfer to DB trains from their flights and vice versa as well. The service is called “Rail & Fly (AIRail)” and they have another baggage drop-off and collection point near the railway station. I would have used it if I had noticed and I hadn't booked a German Rail Pass, because we had to walk for 10 minutes or so from the baggage collection to the railway station.

I felt cold air when I came out of the airport building for a moment. The captain of our flight had announced that it was cloudy and the temperature read 16 degrees before landing. Many people wore jackets, and some people who came from the south including me (I wore sandals, a T-shirt and a thin cardigan) were unlikely to prepare enough. I felt not only cold, but also awkward as if I was in a wrong place.

DB's platform for ICE was clean and modern building featuring steel truss and glass. A small number of people were waiting for their trains. As they looked relaxed and seemed not to leave soon, we sat on a bench and talked each other for a while thinking that there was plenty of time until a train left. But it wasn't, so that we hurriedly jumped on a train to Cologne a few minutes before the departure.

Only some passengers were in a second-class car that we took seats. It was enough clean and spacious. This Frankfurt-Cologne high-speed railway line is 177 km long, and stops only 3 stations (Limburg Süd, Montabaur and Siegburg/Bonn) between Frankfurt Airport and Cologne. What is more, ICE trains on this line run up to 300 km/h on regular service. Surprising, isn't it? That is why we got to Cologne in 1 hour.

フランクフルト空港(Flughafen Frankfurt am Main)に着いたのは現地時間の午後2時前で、予定到着時刻よりも30分程早い到着でした。サマータイムの間は日本とドイツとでは7時間の時差があるので、11時間ほど機内で過ごしたことになります。

フランクフルト空港は、マイン川沿い(ドイツ語だと”am Main”と表現します)の金融都市フランクフルト(Frankfurt am Main)から12kmほど南西に位置します。ドイツの主要国際空港であるばかりでなく、ヨーロッパ第三の運行便数を誇る空港です。多分、空港内が大きいからだと思うのですが、職員の人が自転車や（野球のリリーフカーのような）車で屋内を往来しているのを見かけました。車には誰でも声を掛ければ乗せてくれるようです。

この空港からケルンに行くには二つの方法があります。一つは国内線に乗り継いで、ケルンの中心部から15 kmほど離れているケルン・ボン空港(Köln Bonn Airport)に行く方法です。ですがもう一つの方法、空港から列車を利用した方がケルン中央駅まで行くことができるので簡単に街に行けます。

ドイツの国有鉄道であるドイツ鉄道(Deutsche Bahn: DB)のICE(Intercity Express)と呼ばれる高速列車はフランクフルト空港とケルンの間を約1時間でつないでいます。ルフトハンザは自社便からDBの列車へ、またはその逆のスムーズな乗換手段を用意してくれています。このサービスはRail & Fly（英語表記）とかAIRail（ドイツ語表記）という名前が付いていて、このサービスの利用者のための荷物の受け取り・預け入れ場所は空港の鉄道駅側に別にあります。荷物を受け取ってから駅に行くまでに10分くらい歩かなくてはならず、面倒臭さを感じたので、航空券予約の際にこのサービスに気付いて、しかもジャーマンレイルパス(German Rail Pass)を買っていなかったら、是非ともこのサービスを利用したかったくらいです。

駅に向かう途中少しだけ外に出たら、冷たい風を感じました。着陸前の機内アナウンスによれば、天気は曇りで気温16度。現地の人達はジャケットを着ていて、薄着をしているのは、どこか温暖な地域から来た人ばかりのようでした。私もその日はニットのカーディガンを羽織っていたものの、サンダルに半袖のシャツ姿だったので、寒かっただけでなく、自分が場違いなところにいるような気まずさを感じていました。

ICE用のDBのプラットフォームは鉄骨パイプとガラスでできたモダンで清潔感あふれる建物でした。列車を待つ人はそれほど見あたらず、皆すっかり落ち着いていてすぐにどこかに出発するようには見えなかったので、列車が出発するまで大分時間があると思って私達もベンチに座っていたくらいです。でも本当はそうではなく、出発の1,2分前に慌ててケルン行きの列車に飛び乗ったのでした。

私達の乗り込んだ二等車の車両には数人の乗客しかいませんでした。二等でも十分きれいで広い座席です。このフランクフルト－ケルン間の高速列車用路線は177 kmありますが、フランクフルト空港からケルンまでは3駅(Limburg Süd、 Montabaur、 Siegburg/Bonn)にしか停車しません。しかも、この路線のICEは通常運行時でも、なんと時速300kmまで出すことがあります。すごいですね。だからケルンまで行くのに1時間しかかからないのです。
