Arriving in Cologne (ケルン到着)

Since ICE trains between Frankfurt and Cologne run along the mountain, landscape through the windows is less attractive than that of local trains running along the scenic Rhine. Yet, I saw the rural area has different feeling to Japanese country side. It consists of a granary, cornfield, and I also saw plants and warehouses in the north area. Famous German autobahn (Autobahn) seemed to connect almost all cities in Germany.

Nearly 1 hour later, the train was approaching to the city of Cologne. Houses in suburb area had European feeling although they were not very old. The more we are closer to city centre, the more I saw urban buildings. The area around Koelnmesse, a exhibition centre which is the east bank of the Rhine, was particularly modern, so that it looked nothing different from other international big cities. Actually, it wasn't easy to see old buildings. I've read about the fact that many German cities were recovered from the destruction of bombing by the Allied Forces in World War II as well as Tokyo, but I hadn't exactly understood until I saw one of them with my own eyes.

Soon after passing by the Koelnmesse, the train slowly crossed over the Rhine into the west bank. My eyes caught Cologne Cathedral on the left, but it was so large that I couldn't see the whole picture from the train window.

The central station (Köln Hauptbahnhof) was at the end of the bridge. It was the final stop of the train. My friend and I got off next to other passengers. As soon as I got out of the train, I saw the advertisement of 4711, the famous eau de cologne (As the name “water of Cologne” in French tells, this scented water was first developed in Cologne, and 4711 is its most famous brand). It was a big train station that many trains stop, there were a number of shops and food stands in a station. It was still cold to me, but the sky looked brighter than what I saw in Frankfurt.

No sooner had I stepped outside the station than the cathedral was in front of me. I had seen the scene on TV, but it was far more astonishing than I had imagined. I was so close to the cathedral that I couldn't see the top unless I looked up the sky. The Gothic spire looked utterly alien to other elements of the city, thus I couldn't help staring at this magnificent architecture.

Also surprisingly, there were a large number people at/around the station. It seemed to me too many and too busy as a cathedral city even though it was the weekend of the fourth biggest city in Germany. We soon found that it was unusual, but anyway, we threaded our way through a crowd with suitcases and headed to our accommodation Excelsior Hotel Ernst, a five-star hotel located just a stone's throw from the station and the cathedral.

ICEが走るフランクフルトとケルン間の路線は山側にあるので、普通列車が通るライン川沿いに比べて景色は良くありませんが、それでも日本の田舎の風景とは違う景色が見られます。穀倉地やトウモロコシ畑を見かけましたが、北の方では工場や倉庫なども見られました。有名なアウトバーン(Autobahn)も国内のすべての都市を繋げているかのように整備されています。

1時間も経つと、列車はケルンに近づいてきます。郊外の家はそれほど古くはないものの、ヨーロッパ的な感じもしますが、街の中心部に近づくにしたがって、都市型建築が増えていきます。ライン川右岸（東側）にある展示場施設、ケルンメッセ(Koelnmesse)の周辺になると、特に近代的な建物が増えてきて、他の国際的な大都市と対して変わらないような感じです。実際、古い建物を見つけるのは簡単ではありませんでした。ドイツの都市の多くが東京と同様、第二次世界大戦で連合国軍に破壊された後に復興したということを本で読んではいたのですが、この目で見るまできちんと理解できていなかったのです。

ケルンメッセを通り過ぎると、列車はライン川の上を渡って左岸（西側）に向かいます。ここでケルン大聖堂を左手に見ることになるのですが、大きすぎて列車の車窓からでは全貌が見えませんでした。

ケルン中央駅(Köln Hauptbahnhof)は橋の先にありました。この駅が私達の乗った列車の終点です。他の乗客に続いてプラットフォームに下り立ちます。列車を降りた途端に見えたのがオーデコロン「4711」（その名"ケルンの水"の通り、オーデコロンはケルン発祥とされ、4711は最も有名なブランド）の広告でした。ここはたくさんの列車が停車するとても大きな駅で、構内にはいくつもの店舗や飲食店が軒を連ねています。私にはあいかわらず寒さを感じさせる気温でしたが、空の色はフランクフルトで見た時よりも明るく見えました。

駅を出た途端、目の前に現れるのが大聖堂です。この光景はテレビで見たことがあったのですが、想像していた以上に圧倒される景色です。あまりに距離が近すぎで、空を仰ぎ見ないと上まで視界に入ってきません。ゴシック様式の尖塔は街の他の部分とは完全に異質で、そのためかこの壮大な建造物を凝視せずにはいられませんでした。

意外だったのは、駅構内や周辺のものすごい人だかりでした。いくらドイツ第4の大都市の週末とはいえ、大聖堂の街にしては余りに人が多く、ザワザワしているように思えてならなかったのです。これが普通ではない、ということはその後すぐにわかるのですが、ともかくその時は、スーツケースを引きずりながら人混みをくぐり抜け、宿泊先であるエクセルシオール・ホテル・エルンスト（Excelsior Hotel Ernst）、駅と大聖堂の目と鼻の先にある五ツ星ホテルに向かったのでした。
