After having lunch, we left the castle for Moselkern. As we went along the river, we firstly had to walk down a slope where the river flows. The slope was very steep even though it was long. When I came at the ground and look up the castle, I realised it was deliberately built at the top of the mountain so as not to be struck easily by enemies. The bad access annoyed tourists nowadays, but it was very important for the castle owner in the Middle Ages.

Except this slope, however, the hiking route is so easy and I didn't feel any stress during the trail. The sun shined and the sky turned beautiful blue. It became warmer and warmer while I was walking, and soon I took off my pullover. I'm not keen on a purposeless long walk usually, but I felt great at the moment. I heard birds singing, the sound of the stream while I was taking a walk. Naturally, characters of woods depend on climates and soils, and the forest around the Eltzbachtal valley looked different from forests in Japan. Ignoring scientific explanation, I could say that I wouldn't be surprised if there was a candy cottage or suddenly talked to birds and animals in the German woods.

Not only tourists, but many German people came here to hike. They are bigger and their legs are generally longer than Japanese, which means they walk faster than us. As we kept slow pace in order to look around the scenery, a group of walking behind caught up and left us behind. I was actually impressed that they never stopped talking without breaking their strides. Some people take their pets.

When we walk through the woods for 40 minutes or so, we reached where small caravans and bicycles are parked. Apparently, it is Ringelsteiner Mühle which is mentioned in access information of the castle's website. Hikers parked their cars and bikes there and went to the castle.

The car park was in the outskirts of Moselkern, thus we continued walking along the river. Before long, I saw houses along the pavement and it made me feel that we came to the town. They were all well kept and the town looked very peaceful. We continued walking another half an hour, and then suddenly we heard the trail running on the railway. I gradually walked faster that I thought the station was close. I wasn't aware, but I was a bit tired of walking without a break.

Moselkern is situated where the Eltzbach river empties into the Moselle. People had already settled there in the 12th century, and in the 14th century it belonged to the Eltz family. As well as the other cities in Rhineland, was occupied by France after the French Revolutionary war, and it was assigned to Prussia at the Congress of Vienna.

Small restaurants, cafés and accommodations were not far from the train station. There were many old buildings stood along the main street, and one of them was written “Rathaus” (town hall). I learned later on some websites that it was old town hall built in 1593, and the oldest municipally-owned town hall in the area along the Moselle. It is said that some of other houses were built in the 17th centuries. I had strange feeling as I only saw a few people in the main street in the middle of the day. As we walked on the quiet street, the station was seen at the east end.

The hiking from Burg Eltz through Moselkern train staion, in sum, needs 1 h 20 even if you walk slowly. It was easy course that people who aren’t used to training like me can enjoy.

食事を済ませた後、城を後にしてモーゼルケルン(Moselkern)へ向かいました。川沿いを歩くことになるので、最初は川が流れるところまで坂を下りていかなくてはなりません。そんなに距離はないのですが、結構勾配がきついのです。下りきってから城の方を見上げると、敵から簡単に攻められないように、故意に城が山の上に作られたことがわかります。現代の観光客にとって交通の便の悪さはありがたくないですが、中世の城の所有者にとってはとても重要だったのですね。

ですがこの坂道以外は、ハイキングルートを行くのは簡単で、歩いている間に私がストレスと感じるようなことは全くありませんでした。空はすっかり晴れ渡っていました。歩いているうちにどんどん暖かくなってきて、すぐに上着を脱いでしまったくらいです。普段は目的もなく長時間歩くのは辛いと思う私ですが、この時ばかりはとても気分が良かったものです。歩いている途中、鳥の鳴き声や川のせせらぎを聞きました。当然のことですが、気候や土壌によって森もそれぞれ特徴がありますから、エルツバッハタール渓谷の周辺の森は日本のとは大違いです。科学的なことを無視して言うならば、ドイツの森でお菓子の家があったり、小鳥や動物が急に話し始めたりしてもそんなに驚かないかもしれない、という感じです。

この辺りには観光客だけでなく、地元の人もハイキングにやって来ます。彼らは体が多いく、押し並べて日本人よりも足も長いため、歩くのもとても速いのです。なので周りの景色を見ながらゆっくり歩いていると、後ろを歩いていたグループが追いついてきて、あっという間に追い越して行きました。ハイペースで歩きながらも淀むことなく話し続けられる彼らには感心した次第です。そういえば、ペットを連れている人もいました。

40分ほど山道を歩いて行くと、キャンピングカーや自転車が停められている場所にやってきました。これが案内でよく書かれている、Ringelsteiner Mühle の駐車場かと思われます。ハイカーはここに車や自転車を停めて、それから歩いて城へ向かうようです。

駐車場は町の外れにあるので、私達はさらに川沿いを歩き続けました。しばらくすると道路沿いに家が見えてきて、それでようやく町に着いたのだと実感しました。家はとてもきれいに手入れされていて、町には穏やかな雰囲気が漂っていました。それから30分ほど歩き続けると、急に線路を列車が通って行く音が聞こえてきました。駅が近いのだと思い、足取りが軽くなります。そんなに意識はしていなかったのですが、休みもせずに知らない道を1時間以上歩いて少し疲れていたようです。

モーゼルケルンはエルツ城の脇を流れていたエルツバッハ川がモーゼル川に流れ出す所にある町です。12世紀にはこの辺りに集落があったようで、それが14世紀にエルツ家の領地となります。ラインラントの他の都市と同様、フランス革命戦争後しばらくフランス領となり、ウィーン会議後にプロイセンの領土とされています。

小さなレストランやカフェ、宿泊施設は駅近くにあります。目抜き通り沿いには古い建物も多くあり、そのうちの一つにRathaus（役場）と書かれている建物がありました。後でウェブサイトを読んで知ったのですが、これは1593年に建てられた元役場なのですが、現存する自治体所有の建物としては、モーゼル川流域で最も古い町役場らしいです。この他にもこの辺りには17世紀に建てられた建物が何軒かあるとのことです。まだ日も高いというのに、目抜き通りでさえ数人の人しか見かけないので、なんとも不思議な感じがしました。

結局のところ、エルツ城からモーゼルケルンまでの所要時間は、ゆっくり歩いても1時間20分といったところでした。私のような運動不足・体力なしの人間でも楽しめる簡単なハイキングコースだったと思います。
