A five-star hotel and the truth of the crowd (五ツ星ホテルと混雑の真相)

This time we allowed ourselves staying a luxury hotel so as to get rest with no stress during our journey. After travelling to Norway and Finland last year, I concluded that I am too sensitive to stay in a dorm with total strangers or a budget hotel that needs to walk for long time from the station in the midnight. Fortunately, my friend also agreed to stay in a pleasant hotel. I think he didn't want me to be exhausted during the journey as I'm always in a bad mood when I get tired and hungry.

If I excuse my extravagance, however, I would say the room price of Excelsior Hotel Ernst was less expensive than hotels in Tokyo in the same quality. Our room had a bed room, a closet room and a bath room with a toilet, two basins, 3 showers and a bath-tab. Beverages in a fridge was all free. Not only being comfortable at a room, the interior were taken care and the hotel staff showed us great hospitality. The hotel has genuine concierges as well. A room key still wasn't plastic although it was electronic, so that we needed to leave it with a concierge whenever leaving the hotel. It means that we had a lot of time to say hello to the hotel staff. I had a transient luxurious moment as if I was someone exceptional.

When we were escorted to a room after checking-in, I asked a man at a reception desk about the bustle around the station. He replied it was unusual because of an event held on the next day. In fact, we arrived in Cologne in the middle of the event celebrating Christopher Street Day (CSD), which is the demonstration for the rights of gay community in Europe, and the following day was the final day and people marched through the city in the parade. My friend and I thought it was simply a local demonstration, though afterwards, I learned the demonstration annually held at Cologne is called Cologne Pride and it is one of the largest CSD parades in Europe.

We hadn't noticed before we arrived at the hotel, but we understood what hotel staff explained to us when we went for dinner. That is, there were a number of groups and couples of the same sex around the city. Apparently, they were majority in this small area at the moment, so that we were slightly uncomfortable while I was hanging around Hohe Straße.

We retreated to a Brauhaus and had the first Kölsch in Cologne. The Brauhaus was also crowded, but the hustle and bustle inside was more familiar than people carousing outside to me. We discussed where we went the next day having some small glassed of beer and large dishes. My friend said,

“We came here to see isn't a gay parade, but traditional German culture, you know.”

He was right. We decided to go where we had planned avoiding chaos in the city. Feeling of fullness made me feel drowsy, and we got back to our quiet hotel room soon after having dinner.

That was our first day in Cologne. I should talk to you about the Brauhaus including what it is and how it was like where I went at that time, but I intend to write about it some other time, perhaps with mentioning other Brauhaus and Kölsch we had while I was in Germany.

今回私達は、旅行中ストレスを感じることなく休めるようにと、思い切って豪華なホテルに泊まることにしました。去年ノルウェーとフィンランドを旅行してから認めたことは、自分は赤の他人と相部屋に泊まったり、真夜中に歩いて駅から遠い安ホテルに行ったりするには神経質すぎるということ。幸い今回同行してくれた友人も、居心地の良いホテルに泊まることには賛成してくれたのです。というよりも多分彼は、私には旅の途中ですり減っていってほしくなかったのだと思います。何しろ私、疲れた時とお腹が空いたときはものすごく機嫌が悪いので。

ですが今回の浪費について言い訳するなら、エクセルシオール・ホテル・エルンスト（Excelsior Hotel Ernst）の宿泊料は東京の同レベルのホテルに比べたらとても安いのです。泊まった部屋には寝室の他にクローゼットルーム、バスルームがあり、バスルームはトイレに洗面台二つ、シャワー三つ、バスタブが付いていました。しかも部屋の冷蔵庫の飲み物は無料です。部屋自体の居心地が良いだけでなく、内装もきちんと手入れが行き届いていて、スタッフのサービスも素晴らしいです。コンシェルジュもきちんといますし。部屋の鍵は電子キーだけれどカードではなく、昔ながらのホテルの鍵の形をしています。だから外出するたびに鍵を預けることになり、それだけスタッフと接する時間も多くなります。自分が特別な人間であるかのような、束の間のお金持ち気分に浸れる、それは素晴らしいホテルでした。

チェックイン後に部屋に案内される時、レセプション・デスクの男性に駅周辺の混雑について聞いてみました。すると彼は、翌日のイベントがあるのでこの週末は特別なのだと教えてくれました。実は、私達がケルンに到着した日はクリストファー・ストリート・デイ（Christpher Street Day: CSD、ヨーロッパのゲイ・コミュニティーが自分たちの権利のためにデモを行うイベント）の最中で、今年は7月3日が最終日でパレードが行われる日だったのです。それを聞いて、友人も私もごくローカルなデモだと思っていたのですが、後になって、ケルンで行われるのは「Cologne Pride」と呼ばれ、ヨーロッパで開催される同様のイベントの中でも最大規模のものの一つだということを知ったのでした。

ホテルに到着するまでは全く気がつかなかったものの、夕食のために再びホテルから出た時にはホテルの人が説明してくれたことをはっきりと理解しました。というのも、街中同性のカップルやグループで一杯だったのです。見たところ、彼らはこの限定的なエリアでは今や多数派で、この街のショッピング・ストリートであるホーエ通り(Hohe Straße)の辺りをぶらぶらしている間、こちらの方が少しばかり居心地の悪さを感じてしまうほどでした。

私達は逃げ込むようにブラウハウス(Brauhaus)に入ることにしました。ブラウハウスも混雑していましたが、中の騒がしさは外での大騒ぎに比べればとても身近な感じがしたものです。一皿が大きな料理と何杯かのビール（ケルンでの初めてのケルシュでした）でお腹を満たしながら、翌日の行先について話し合います。そこで友人が一言。

「ウチら、ゲイ・パレードじゃなくて、伝統的なドイツに触れるためにここに来たんでしょ。」

確かに。そんなわけで翌日は街の喧騒を避け、計画していた行先に向かうことに決まりました。お腹が一杯になったら、眠気に誘われてしまい、食事の後は静かなホテルの部屋にさっさと戻ったのでした。

これがケルン滞在1日目の出来事です。本当はここでブラウハウスのことを、それがどういうもので、どんな雰囲気なのかも含めて話すべきなのだけれど、それについて書くのはまた別の時にしようと思います。おそらく他のブラウハウスとドイツ滞在中に飲んだケルシュのことも、そこで一緒に触れるはずです。
