A boat had waited in a dock when our bus arrived at Gudvangen. We had short time in this place as our bus had got there less than 10 minutes before the boat departed. Yet, I don't regret that situation as it seemed there wasn't any remarkable except a souvenir shop and a restaurant in front of the small dock.

To be honest, I didn't feel like to care about this place. I was in a hurry to get on the boat even though I knew it was waiting for us. And besides, the landscape in front of me was far more eye-catching than a small town.

The Nærøyfjord spread out before us. It is one of many arms of the Sognefjord and the narrowest fjord in the world about 20 km long. The boat leaves Gudvangen and sail up the fjord. Being true to its name, it was narrow like a river, and steep mountains were approaching both side of the water. Beautiful blue sky, deep blue water were there. Mountains looked dark green and black. The snow remained on the top of high up some mountains, and water having white splash cascaded on the surface. It was breathtaking view I hadn't ever seen.

In the boat, people spontaneously pressed the shutter button of their cameras. Some were having lunch drinking beer and some were enjoyed some sun. Sunlight was strong and it was hot as we were on a boat around the noon, but the brisk air made me feel little cold while I was on board. Amazed by the magnificent view, I couldn't do anything except staying on the deck and seeing the scenery during this 2-hour-cruise.

An hour later, the boat approached the apex of the route, and then sailed down the Aurlandsfjord, another arm of the Sognefjord, to Flåm. It was less exciting than the Nærøyfjord as it is wider, but the view from the boat was still beautiful. Some towns were located along the Aurlandsfjord, and I thought it was remarkable that some people still lived in such inconvenient place.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that I had prepared for the cruise. Actually, I had been eager to listen to Morning Mood in Peer Gynt Suites watching fjord, so that I brought the music copied on my iPod. You might think I was strange, but I had thought seriously that it was wonderful idea, and then I put it into practice during the cruise. It was extremely awe-inspiring as I had expected. Multilingual audio guide heard during the cruise was less important to me. However, Morning Mood heard on my earphones was far more wonderful than any other BGM I have ever heard. The colours of landscapes, winds, air, and the sunlight..., I still remember that I saw and felt during the cruise with the melody.

私達を乗せたバスがグドヴァンゲンに着いた時には、ボートが船着き場で待っていました。ボートの出発まで10分程度しかなかったため、この町でゆっくりする時間もなかったのですが、それほど残念なことではなかったように思います。というのも、船着き場の手前にはレストランと土産モノを売る店くらいしか見当たらなかったからです。

それに、正直に言うと、町の方を気にする気なんてありませんでした。私たちが乗船するまで動かないのは分かっていましたが、それでも早くボートに乗らなくては、と急ぎ足だったし、それに目の前に広がる景色の方が町よりも遥かに注目すべきものだったからです。

目の前にはネーロイフィヨルド（Nærøyfjord）が広がっていました。ソグネフィヨルドの数ある支流のうちの一つで、全長20kmの世界で最も細いフィヨルドです。ボートはグドヴァンゲンを出発すると、このフィヨルドを北上していきます。その名の通り、川のように細く、急勾配の山がその両脇に迫っています。きれいな青い素r、濃い青色をした水面。それに山々は深緑にも黒にも見えます。高い山の山頂には雪が残り、白い水しぶきを上げて滝が山肌を流れます。今まで見たことのない息をのむほどの景色でした。

船上では、観光客がカメラのシャッターを無我夢中で押していました。軽い昼食を食べたりビールを飲む人、日光浴をしている人もいました。ちょうど昼時にボートに乗っていたので、日差しは強く、暑かったのですが、爽やかで冷たい空気で少し寒いと感じもしました。壮大な風景にすっかり感動して、2時間のクルーズの間ずっとデッキに居座って景色を眺めるしかありませんでした。

ボートに乗って1時間くらいすると、ボートは航路の北の先端に到達し、そこから、やはりソグネフィヨルド支流であるアウルランフィヨルド(Aurlandsfjord)をフロム(Flåm)に向かって南下していきます。アウルランフィヨルドはネーロイフィヨルドよりも幅が広いため、前半と比べて興奮度も低めになりますが、それでも船上からの景色は非常に美しいです。このフィヨルド沿いにはいくつかの小さな町があって、それを見ると、こんな不便そうなところにまで人が住んでいるはすごいことだなと思わずにはいれらません。

そういえば、このクルーズのために準備していたことについて話すのを忘れていました。実は、どうしてもフィヨルドを眺めながらペール・ギュントの「朝」を聴きたくて、CDを自分のiPodにコピーして持ってきていたのです。多分私のことをヘンな人間だと思う人もいるとは思うけれど、自分としては、本気で素晴らしいアイデアだと思ったんです。実現してみても、それはもう期待通り、ものすごく感動的な経験でした。クルーズの間、何カ国語かでフィヨルドと周辺地域を説明するガイド音声が流れているのですが、そんなのは私にとってはどうでもよくて、イヤフォンから聞こえる「朝」はどんなBGMよりも素晴らしかったです。風景の色、吹いていた風、空気、そして太陽の光など、船の上でこの目で見て、肌で感じたことを今でもメロディーとともに思い出します。
