Travel to Scandinavia: Introduction (北欧旅行: はじめに)
A friend in Chinese school suddenly sent me a e-mail in mid-April. The message was,
"I wonder if you travel to Scandinavia with me."
I had no idea what she planned, but the scenery of fjord that I saw on a magazine instantly came to my mind and it made me say yes.
Subsequently, I heard she had planned to travel into Norway (in order to see fjord) through Finland. As I acknowledged it was her journey, I thought it was she that made choice and I shouldn't disturb her schedule. Yet I proposed one plan, which is to take Bergen Railway.
This railway runs nearly 500km between Bergen and Oslo. It is the highest mainline in Northern Europe and it is famous for a variety of beautiful scenery on the way. I basically like train journey (as I have already mentioned on another post), and of course I have been interested in this scenic railway.
Fortunately, she was willing to take up my offer as she liked trail as well.
Although a company I work for had drastic reformation in this spring, my boss kindly accepted my more-than-1-week-leave application. I always complain about the organization and the management, but such liberal atmosphere in the office is worth compliment.
We soon have got air tickets and fixed a schedule. We left Tokyo for Norway June 4 mainly for seeing 2 fjord sites, and then flew to Helsinki. We spent 2 and a half days there and went home on Sunday, June 13. It was hectic, but I saw a lot than I expected.
I named this travel writing Travel to Scandinavia. It is unlikely as the countries I went were Norway and Finland. (The definition of "Scandinavia" is controversial, you know.) Yet, I allow myself to call it since I visited 2 countries in Northern Europe.

詳しいことは全くわからなかったけれど、以前に雑 誌で見たフィヨルドの景色を思い浮かべ、二つ返事で「行きます」と返信しました。
その後、彼女の立てた計画を見て、ノルウェーのフィヨル ドを見て、フィンランドに渡る旅だということを確認。誘っていただいた旅なので、彼女の予定を大幅に変更しなくてはいけないような要望をするつもりはな かったけれど、その日程に入れば、と提案してみたのが、ベルゲン急行に乗ること。
ベルゲン急行はノルウェーのベルゲン－オスロ間の約 500kmを走る鉄道。北ヨーロッパでは最も高い地点を走り、その間様々な自然の風景を眺めることができる列車としても有名です。
彼女も 列車に乗るのが好きとのことで、応じてもらえました。
勤め先では大きな組織変更があったり、上長が変わったりと面倒な時期だったにもかか わらず、6月上旬に快く1週間プラス1日のお休みをいただきました。会社自体や自分の仕事に対して不満は多々あるけれど、こういうときに気持ち良くお休み を取らせてもらえるというのは、本当にありがたいことだと思う。
休暇の許可が出てすぐに、飛行機のチケットも取りました。6月4日にノルウェーに向かい、二つのフィヨルドの景勝地をめぐって9日にヘルシンキに移動、12日（到着は日付が変わって13日）に帰途につくという盛りだくさんの旅程になりました。
北欧の旅というには少し範囲が狭いけれど、国を跨いで旅をしたので、とりあえずこう呼ばせてもらいます。
