Mount Floyen and a funicular (Fløien og Fløibanen, フロイエン山)

The first place I visited in Bergen was Mount Floyen (Fløien). Every guidebooks mention that tourists must go there and see the "magnificent / spectacular / wonderful" views. It also sounds interesting to me that we can take a funicular railway. I admit, I really like to get on a sort of trains. As it was really beautiful weather, I proposed my friend to go there in the afternoon soon after we arrived in Bergen.

The funicular, also called Fløibanen, runs between a station situated in the city centre and the top of Mount Floyen which is 320 metres above sea level. There are 2 funiculars, but the railway has single track. It has nearly a hundred year history, and local people get on this funicular for daily use.

In my opinion, the funicular itself wasn't very exciting, but the interesting thing was that the passenters began to understand the full picture of Bergen as the funicular was approaching the top of the Mountain.

Certainly, from the top of the mountain there was extensive prospect of Bergen and the sea beyond. It was marvellous view. The buildings in the city and the beautiful woodland are surrounded between blue sky and the blue sea.

There is a park where a large figure of troll (a fearsome, but somehow funny-looking creature from Norse mythology) was standing, and local people were there with their children. Yet, there aren't many things to see there, so that some tourists looked at the view for long time, some were browsing a souvenir shop and the others took a rest at a café.

When I was in the café, one female tourist had a cup of coffee at the terrace writing a postcard. She was smiling. Perhaps she might remember what she experienced, or might think of who she sent it to. It was really heart warming, and I recalled that I had kept postcards to send as I missed the chance in Stavanger. I bought some stamps to put at a souvenir shop and posted them before I left the mountain.

ベルゲンで最初に訪れたのがフロイエン山（Mt. Floyen; Fløien)です。どのガイドブックでも、素晴らしい景色が見られるので行くべきだ、とお勧めの場所で、ケーブルカーに乗れるというのに、私は興味をそそられました。べつに筋金入りの"鉄子"ではないけれど、列車に乗るのは大好きだから。それにベルゲンに到着した日はとても天気が良かったので、友人にその日のうちに行ってしまおうと提案したのでした。

ケーブルカーはFløibanenという名前が付いています。私のゲルマン系言語（ドイツ語）のつたない知識から考えるに、"フロイエンの列車"ってことなんでしょう。ともかく町の中心部にある麓の駅から海抜（町が海辺にあるから標高も同じだと思うけれど）320mのところにある山頂までを結びます。二車両が交互に走っているのだけれど、単線です。100年近くの歴史があるケーブルカーで、地元の人も日々の往来に利用しているようです。

個人的な意見としては、ケーブルカー自体はそんなに凄いものではありませんが、山頂に近づくにしたがってベルゲンの全貌が見えてくるところにあるかと思います。

たしかにフロイエン山からは、ベルゲンとその背後にある海を見渡すことができます。素晴らしい景色です。町の建物と美しい森林が、青い空と青い海に挟まれていました。

山頂には大きなトロル（北欧の伝承に出てくる生き物で、恐ろしいものなのですがちょっと憎めない感じです）の像がいる公園があって、地元の人が子供を連れて遊びに来ていました。でも基本的には景色以外は見るものがないところなので、観光客は眼下の景色を長いこと眺めていたり、売店をひやかしてみたり、カフェで休んだりしていました。

私がカフェにいた時、一人の女性がテラスでハガキを書きながらコーヒーを飲んでいるのを見かけました。微笑みながら。多分これまでのことを思い出して、それじゃなかったら送る相手のことを考えてのことだったのでしょう。とても心和む情景で、そういえば自分もスタヴァンゲルで出しそびれたハガキを持っていたなと思い出したのでした。売店で貼る切手を買って、山頂を去る前にポストに投函しました。
