from Voss to Gudvangen (ヴォスからグドヴァンゲンへ)
When the Nutshell travelers arrive at Voss, they can take connecting bus to Gudvangen waiting for the train. I couldn't, though.
The buses (they were two) were full as the passengers were more than the organizer expected. Shortly after the confusion, one of the bus drivers announced that there was a mistake, but another bus would come soon. He also said that no one miss the next transportation. I found later that it was the policy of the Nutshell, and I think which is great. And yet, less than 10 people from all over the world were left in the small local station in Norway for a while, worrying if our ferry really waited for us a little.
As promised, another bus came soon and picked us up. A driver announced for the Nutshell travelers that the bus arrived at 10 minutes before the scheduled departure of a ferry at Gudvangen, which was 11.30 am, although it was little delayed.
The bus went through pastoral countryside. As you easily imagine from the name of the town, which is adopted as expensive bottled water VOSS, this mountainous region have rivers and many waterfalls. We saw fast flowing rivers in the first half of the route, where some people enjoyed rafting. Especially, I was amazed by a wide waterfall called Tvinnefossen (Tvindefossen Waterfall) because it was just right off the road.
Later, the bus began to climb up the mountain and stopped at the top of this road for a minute for tourists. There is Stalheim Hotel, and according to a guidebook, there had been an inn here for centuries, where the royal mailmen changed houses. I could easily imagine how hard the way was since the access to inland fjord is still not easy as it depends on vehicles and ships.
After a brief stop at the top, the bus went down a series of switchbacks very slowly. It was extremely steep and the 2 waterfalls named Sivlefossen and Stalheimsfossen were beside the road. Undoubtedly, this is the most spectacular view point on the bus route, so that many tourists including me took many photographs of waterfalls and fjords below our eyes. Every time the bus turned the switchbacks, we moved to the opposite side of seats and held cameras to shoot nice pictures. It was easy for us as there was a small number of people, then I thought it might be lucky that I couldn't take first 2 buses.
When the main event was over, the fjord valley was in front of our eyes. It is called Nærøydalen. The view seemed to me like Rivendell described on The Lord of the Rings (please read The Fellowhip of the Ring
at first when you have time if you haven't read it. I strongly recommend this wonderful fantasy). An hour had passed since I left Voss station. I naturally felt that our destination was close.
ナットシェルの旅行者はヴォスに到着すると、駅前で列車の到着を待っているグドヴァンゲン行きのバスに乗り換えるようになっています。ですが、私はこれができなかったんです。
想定されていた以上に乗客が多かったらしく、バス（2台いました）が満員だったのです。ですがちょっとした混乱後、すぐにバスの運転手の一人が、催行側の手違いだけれどもすぐにバスをこちらによこすとアナウンスしました。彼はまた、ナットシェルの旅行者はみんな次の交通手段に乗り遅れることはないとも言いました。後になって知ったのですが、これがナットシェルのポリシーだそうです。素晴らしいですね。ですが、世界中から集まってきた10人弱の人達は、ノルウェーの片田舎の小さな駅にしばらくの間取り残されることになったわけです。本当にフェリーは自分たちのことを待っていてくれるのか、とちょっと不安になりながら。
言われた通り、少ししてから別のバスがやってきて、私達を拾ってくれました。そのバスの運転手は旅行者に、予定より出発は遅れているけれど、グドヴァンゲンにはフェリーの出発する10分前には到着するので、予定出発時間の11時30分に間に合うとアナウンスしてきました。
バスは田園風景の中を走っていきました。Voss という町の名前から想像がつく人もいるかもしれませんが、バカみたいに高いミネラルウォーターの名前に採用されるくらいで、この辺りは川や滝がたくさんあります。ルートの最初の方では非常に早い流れの川があり、人々がラフティングを楽しんでいるのが見えました。この辺りで特に私が感動したのは、トゥヴィンネフォッセン(Tvinnefossen)と呼ばれる、横に広い滝です。なぜかというと、この滝、車道のすぐ脇に見えるんですね。
後の方になると、バスは山を登っていき、道の最も高いところまで到達すると、しばらくの間観光客のために停車します。スタールへイム・ホテル(Stalheim Hotel) というホテルがあって、ガイドブックによる、ここには何世紀もの間宿があり、その昔は郵便配達人がここで馬を替えたのだとか。今でさえ内陸のフィヨルドに行くには車か船に頼らざるを得ず、あまり便利ではないのだから、その昔はいかに大変だったかというのは容易に想像できました。
ほんの少し停車した後、バスはジグザグ道をゆっくりと降りていきました。とても急な道で、その横にはシヴレフォッセンとスタールへイムフォッセンという二つの滝がありました。疑う余地もなく、ここがバスルートの中で一番の見どころで、私を含め旅行者は、滝と眼下に広がるフィヨルドの写真を撮りまくっていました。バスが道を曲がるたびに逆の窓側に陣取って、グッド・ショットと狙ってカメラを構えます。バスには少数の乗客しかいなかったので、これをするのは簡単で、こう考えると最初のバスに乗りそびれたのは正解だったかも、と思ったりしたものです。
このメイン・イベントが終わると、Nærøydalenという名のフィヨルド峡谷が目の前に広がります。私にはこの景色が『指輪物語』に出てくるRivendell（裂け谷）のように見えたくらいで（読んでない人は時間があったら、とりあえず『新版 指輪物語〈1〉旅の仲間)
』を読んでみて下さい、一押しのファンタジーです）、この世のものとは思えない美しい景色でした。ヴォス駅を出て1時間、終点が近いことをなんとなく感じられました。
