When you go to the capital cities of Scandinavian countries from Tokyo, SAS flies directly to Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo, and Finnair goes directly to Helsinki. They take you there in between 9.5 and 11.5 hours.

Yet, it is true that you don't have to stick with buying a return ticket of these airlines. Many international airlines are in service in most airports in Scandinavian countries. These countries are vast and each city is not accessible by vehicles. Sometimes, it is rather convenient to use local airlines or ships to move another city.

A friend of mine, who likes travel very much, had decided to fly from Tokyo to Stavanger, Norway and departed Scandinavia from Helsinki, Finland. I won't explain the reason why she chose Stavanger on this post as I'm going to tell you later post, but anyway, at the time she made up her mind to go there at first, we didn't have choice to take a direct flight. We compared air fares and flight schedules (in addition, she considered efficient flight distance as well), and eventually chose KLM which went to Stavanger with a stopover in Amsterdam.

Our plane left Narita Airport early afternoon and landed Amsterdam at 6 o'clock in the afternoon. (c.f. Time in Japan is 7 hours earlier than that in Netherlands and Norway.) 1 hour before arriving at Amsterdam, I saw small islands scattered on the sea from a window. I found later that the plane was flying between Sweden and Denmark. I hadn't seen such interesting scenery before as I hadn't been to Amsterdam. When the plane flew over Netherlands, I noticed wind power generators stand on green and brown squared level ground.

We had nearly 2 hours in the Schiphol Airport until taking our next flight, but I was really enjoyed to look around. It is one of important international airport in Europe, so that a vast variety of passengers who speaks different languages are in large terminal. A number of shops stands side by side, cafes and restaurants offer meals, snacks and drinks including Heineken. Reek of strong perfumes that people wore recalled that I came Europe.

Other passengers taking the same flight seemed Norwegian as they had a couple of duty-free-bottles of wine. I suppose they bought them for drink at home in the weekend. On the plane, female cabin crew are so tall that they seemed touch the plane ceiling quite easily. I recognized that I was approaching Norway.

The flight from Amsterdam through Stavanger took about 1.5 hours, but it hadn't got dark until it arrived. I arrived at the Sola Airport, Stavanger and it was nearly 11 o'clock in the evening when I got on a bus to city centre. When I saw the sky, the sun was about to set.

東京から北欧のどこかの首都に行くのであれば、スカンジナビア航空（SAS）がストックホルム、コペンハーゲンそしてオスロに、フィンエアーがヘルシンキにそれぞれ直行便を出していて、9時間半から11時間半くらいで現地に行くことができるようになっています。

でも北欧旅行の際、何も直行便の往復航空券にこだわる必要がないのも事実です。様々な国際便が北欧の各都市に就航しているし、国が広いから地上交通だけに頼って移動するのはちょっと不便。むしろ各国の国内便や海上交通を利用した方が便利なときもあるようです。

旅行好きな私の友人は、旅行の話を持ちかけられた時にはすでに、ノルウェーのスタヴァンゲル(Stavanger)という都市から入って、帰りはフィンランドのヘルシンキ(Helsinki)から帰ることに決めていました。彼女がスタヴァンゲルを選んだ理由については後で書くつもりなのでここで説明するのは避けますが、ともかくこの旅程になった時点で直行便という選択肢はありませんでした。なので、いくつかの航空運賃とスケジュールを比べ（それに加えて彼女は効率の良い飛行距離であることも念頭に置いていました、すごいね）、アムステルダムを経由するKLMの便を選んだのでした。

乗った飛行機は成田空港を昼過ぎに出て、アムステルダムにその日の夕方6時頃に到着しました。（ちなみにオランダ、それにノルウェーと日本との時差は7時間。日本の方が早いです。）　アムステルダムに着く1時間くらい前に飛行機の窓から海の上に点在する小さな島々を見つけました。後でわかったのだけれど、この頃スウェーデンとデンマークの上辺りを飛んでいたようです。アムステルダムの空港に寄ったことは今までになかったので、こういう景色を見るのは初めてで興味を引かれました。オランダ国内に入ったあたりからは緑と茶色の区画整理された地面の上に規則正しく立てられている風力発電機が見えてきました。

次の便までにアムステルダムのスキポール空港で2時間近く時間を潰しましたが、あそこ、本当に面白いですね。ヨーロッパの主要な国際空港なこともあって、色々な言語を話す多種多様な人々が空港を往き来っています。いくつもの店が軒を並べ、きちんとした食事から軽食・飲み物（もちろんハイネケンも）を出すレストランやカフェがありました。鼻を刺すようなキツい香水の香りに、自分がヨーロッパにやって来たことに改めて気付かされました。

同じ便に乗るノルウェー人と思しき人達は、免税店で買ったワインのボトルをいくつか持っています。た。多分週末に家族と飲むために買っていくんでしょうね。ノルウェーでは税金のせいでお酒代が高いから。飛行機に乗ったら乗ったで、アテンダントの女性の身長が非常に高くて、この人達、機内の天井に簡単に手がつくんじゃないのかしらと思うくらい。ノルウェーに行こうとしているんだなあ、としみじみと感じた瞬間でした。

アムステルダムからスタヴァンゲルまでは1時間半程度の夜のフライトでしたが、着陸まで空が暗くなることはありませんでした。スタヴァンゲルの空港に着いて、バスに乗って市内に向かった頃には夜の11時になっていました。空を見ると、ちょうど日が沈もうとするところでした。
