Flåm (フロム)

The boat arrived at Flåm at 13.40, the south end of the Aurlandsfjord. This small town located on the bottom of a valley has small population, but a large number of tourists visit there especially in the summer as it is the gateway to the Sognefjord. Thus, the town offers almost everything they need, for example accommodations, restaurants and cafes, souvenir shops, tourist information office and luggage storage. In addition, some tour agents offer attractions such as fjord boat cruise, kayaking bicycle rental service and guided town tours.

We had 2 hours before we got on a train, so that we just spent time hanging around a dock. Since there wasn't anything interesting in a warehouse-like souvenir shop, I went to a small museum next to the platform.

The museum called Flåm Railway Documentation Centre. It used be an old station building, and we can learn about the history of Flåm Railway (which I tell you about the later post), its technological development and day-to-day life in Flåm there. It was worth visiting because we could see old pictures and tools for free. This small building has a small souvenir shop selling the railway goods. I liked them very much, and I eventually bought souvenir there.

Which reminds me, the shop sold Mondaine as well. I thought it was interesting because it was well known as “official Swiss Railways Clock” as far as I knew. It seemed nothing to do with Flåm Railway, but I noticed that Mondaine's clock stood at the platform after looking at the products in the shop. I still don't know why, but anyway, Mondaine is also official Flåm Railway Clock, apparently.

Trains left the station twice while I was hanging around. The third one came almost 30 minutes before the departure, and at 16.05, it left the bottom of the valley and took us to Myrdal, a station of the Bergen Railway.

ボートは午後1時40分にアウルランフィヨルドの南端の町、フロム(Flåm)に到着しました。この、谷間にある小さな町は、人口は少ないのですが、特に夏には非常に多くの観光客が訪れます。というのもここがソグネフィヨルドの玄関口だからです。そのため、この町では、宿泊施設、飲食店、土産物店、観光案内所に荷物預かり所など、観光客が求めるものすべてが用意されています。それに、旅行会社もフィヨルド・クルーズやカヤック、レンタサイクルに町のガイドツアーなどのエクスカーションを用意しています。

列車に乗るまでに私たちには2時間くらいしかなかったので、船着き場周辺をブラブラして過ごしました。まるで倉庫のような土産物店には興味を引くものがなかったので、プラットフォームの脇にあった小さな博物館に行ってみました。

博物館はFlåm Railway Documentation Centre（フロム鉄道資料館、という感じでしょうかね）と言います。以前は駅舎としてしようされていた場所に展示があって、フロム鉄道（これについては、別のところで説明します）の歴史や技術的発展、そしてフロムの町での生活などを知ることができます。昔の写真や鉄道関連の道具を入場料無料で見れるのですから、見に行く価値はあります。この建物には小さな土産物店もあって、そこではフロム鉄道グッズが売られています。（ちょっと鉄子なので、）かなり気に入って、結局ここでお土産を買い込みました。

そういえば、このお店で、MONDAINEの時計が売られていたんです。このブランド、スイス国鉄の公式時計ブランドのはず、と思って興味を引きました。フロム鉄道とは何の関係もなさそうでしたが、この商品を見た後にプラットフォームを眺めたら、MONDAINEの時計が立ってたんです。結局なぜなのかはわからないのですけれど、MONDAINEはフロム鉄道の公式時計でもあるみたいですね。

私が町を散策している間に、2度ほど列車が出ていきました。その次が自分の乗る列車で、出発の30分近く前に着き、16時5分に谷底にある駅を出発して、ベルゲン急行の駅であるミュルダル(Myrdal)に私たちを運んでいきました。
