at the city of Stavanger (スタヴァンゲルにて)
The history of the city began when the cathedral was build in the 12th century. The role as a religious centre had been declined with the Protestant Reformation, but the cathedral exists in the city as the oldest cathedral still in constant use in Norway. It is Stavanger Cathedral (Stavanger domkirke) and situated in the center of the city.
After the recession caused by Protestant Reformation, the main industry of Stavanger was shipping, shipbuilding and the canning of fish products until it became the Petroleum Capital in Norway. It appeared to me that such feeling of old seaport town still surronded the city.
However, Saturday evening was the exception. Many people went to bars and pubs situated along the port in order to drink with friends and it is like a party. They had wines and beers so much without caring much about expensive alcohol fee. As a result, the city centre was really messy on Sunday morning. Lots of rubbish, cigarette butts and broken bottles of beer are left in the street.
Even so, Old Stavanger (Gamle Stavanger) located in the was decent area in the city. Small white wooden houses originally build in 18th century were preserved in this area and according to the visitnorway.com, now it consists of 173 buildings. Some of them are privately owned, so that I saw the residents swept the pavement, looked after their gardens when I walked around in the Sunday morning. It was extremely peaceful as if time has stopped in the early 20th century.
スタヴァンゲルの町の歴史自体は、大聖堂（この周辺地域の司教座聖堂ということ）が12世紀にできたあたりから始まるようです。プロテスタントへの改宗を機に町の勢いは弱まるものの、大聖堂自体は現在に至るまで現役で、スタヴァンゲル大聖堂 (Stavanger Cathedral, Stavanger domkirke)は、町の中心部にノルウェーで最も古い大聖堂として残されています。
宗教的な要所としての役割を終えてから、北海で石油が見つかる前まで、スタヴァンゲルの主要産業は、海運、造船業、そして海産物の缶詰製造などでした。私の感じた限りでは、こういう古い港町の雰囲気がいまだに町中を包んでいる気がしてなりません。
ですが土曜の夕方の町は少々違うようです。たくさんの人が港沿いにあるバーやパブに繰り出して、友人と飲んでいるらしく、その様子はまるでパーティー。若い人は高い酒代も気にすることなく、何杯もワインやビールを飲んでいました。そんな状態なので、日曜の朝になると町の中心部にはゴミや、タバコの吸い殻、それに割れたビール瓶などが散らかっています。こういう様子を見ると、ここもそんなに田舎ではないのかも、と思えてきたりして。
そんな中でもOld Stavanger あるいはノルウェー語で Gamle Stavanger と呼ばれる辺りはとても静かです。18世紀頃に立てられた白塗りの小さな木造家屋が保存活動により残されており、ウェブサイトによると、ここには173戸の建物があるそうです。一部は個人所有の家屋になっているとのころで、日曜の朝に歩いていたら、家の前を掃除したり、庭や鉢植えの手入れをしている人を見かけました。20世紀初頭くらいのところで時間が止まってしまったような感覚になるくらい平和な光景でした。
