Akershus Castle (Akershus slot, アーケシュフース城)

My friend and I visited Akershus Castle (Akershus slot) after going to the City Hall. It is situated at the sea near the City Hall, and it is still under the custody of the Norwegian Armed Forces.

It was constructed by King Håkon V, who was the last King of the Fairhair dynasty (the first royal dynasty of the united Kingdom of Norway) and made Oslo the national capital of Norway in 1314 to protect the city. Since then, the fortress has survived many sieges, primarily by Swedish forces. In 17th century, King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway rebuilt the fortress as a Renaissance palace at the same time when he reconstructed the city of Oslo as "Christiania."

People can see the restored hall, a chapel and dungeons with tombs of Norwegian Royalty with free audio guide. This audio guide explains about not only history and architecture but also some anecdotes of art and ghosts. It was really helpful to look around the castle, because the castle itself is not especially fascinating. Frankly speaking, a medieval feeling had been disappeared by the restorations, and it wasn't sophisticated as a Renaissance palace comparing to others in Southern Europe.

However that is, the building shows us that Oslo's role was reduced to that of provincial administrative centre after the reign of Håkon V under the rule of Denmark-Norway, and now it is really hard to find the remain of the first royal dynasty. I supposed that is one of the reason that Norwegian thought important to be independent from other Scandinavian countries.

市庁舎に行った後、アーケシュフース城（Akershus Castle, Akershus slot)を訪ねました。市庁舎の近くの海沿いにあって、今でも軍事施設として扱われています。

城は1314年にオスロを首都にした国王でノルウェー最初の統一王朝の末裔、ホーコン5世（Håkon V）によって12世紀に建設されます。この国王は、1314年に首都をオスロに移した人物で、城は首都の防衛のための要塞として建てられました。それ以来この要塞は数々の、特にスウェーデンからの攻撃に耐えてきました。その後17世紀にデンマーク=ノルウェーの国王クリスチャン4世(Christian IV)が、オスロの街をクリスチャニア(Christiania)として復興させた時に、この要塞をルネサンス様式の宮殿として再建しています。

訪れた人は、修復された大ホールや、宮殿内教会やノルウェー王室の霊廟などのある地下室などを、城の歴史や建物だけでなく、美術品や幽霊に関する逸話などの説明もあるオーディオガイド片手に見学できるようになっています。城の中身自体は特筆すべきこともないので、このオーディオガイドは非常に役に立ちました。率直に言うと、修復によって建設当時の中世の雰囲気は失われているし、ルネサンス様式の建造物としては南欧のものに比べるとちょっと貧相なんですよね。

ですが言い換えれば、それはデンマーク=ノルウェー時代のオスロは、国の中の州都の一つとしてしか扱われなくなったということで、現在ではそれ以前の統一王朝の名残を今に見つけることは非常に難しいのでしょう。でもこういった背景があったから、ノルウェーの人々は他のスカンディナビア諸国からの独立を望んだのだろうな、というのを感じさせられました。
