Welcome reception and dinner

Hot shower in the compartment was refreshing after getting soaked. As an attendant said when she gave an instruction how to use a bathroom, water running from a tap was warm like hot water. It was because water tanks on the train were heated naturally in day time. But it wasn't any problem. Hot water wasn't too hot.

After my friend and I got dressed, we sorted out our compartment (as we knew crew make beds during dinner time). We stayed there shortly, but soon we heard the announcement that welcome reception was held at the lounge car.

In the car, some attendants were waiting for us with sparkling wine or soft drinks, and one of the train managers gave a speech and introduces the train and the route. What I remember is that a little bit about the train and talk about kangaroos. She said that guests might see them from the window sometimes early in the morning. Unfortunately, I didn't see any wild kangaroos during the trip. It was extremely hot while I was staying in Australia because of a record heat wave. It is no doubt not only human but animals didn't want to go outside for long time at that time.

While we were listening, the first dinner had been finished and the table for the second was prepared. Dinner has 2 courses plus dessert with coffee or tea. In each courses, we are able to choose one from 2 or 3 dishes. Variety of drink including nice Australian wine is available and you can have some of them by a glass. When we share the same table with other passengers, we talked with them. It may be sometimes problem when you are seated with a difficult person, but most of them were quite friendly and nice to talk with.

個室についているシャワーを浴びたら、ズブ濡れで疲れていた体もスッキリしました。乗務員の人が教えてくれていたことですが、洗面所の蛇口やシャワーから流れる水は、お湯と言っていいくらい温かくなっていました。これは昼間の間に列車のタンクの中の水が自然と温かくなってしまうためです。ですが、飲み水ではないし、お湯自体熱すぎるようなものでもないので、何の問題もありません。

シャワーを浴びて着替えた後、少し部屋を片付けました（夕食の間に乗務員の人がベッドメイキングに来ることを聞いていたので）。そのまま個室にいると、間もなくして歓迎レセプションがラウンジで開かれるというアナウンスが入ってきました。

ラウンジカーに入ると、何人かの乗務員がスパークリング・ワインやソフトドリンクを持って待っていました。トレイン・マネージャーの一人が（マネージャーも交代制なのです）が、スピーチをし、列車や経路について説明してくれました。私が覚えているのは、列車のこととカンガルーのことです。彼女が言うには、早朝ならカンガルーを窓から見ることができるかもしれないとのことでした。でも残念ながら、私がこの旅の途中で野生のカンガルーを見ることはありませんでした。滞在中、オーストラリアは記録的な熱波のためにかなりの暑さでした。人間に限らず動物だって、そんな時には長いこと外にいたいなんて思わなかったでしょう。

そんな話を聞いているうちに、一巡目の夕食の時間が終わり、その後の人達のためのテーブルが整いました。夕食は前菜とメイン、それにデザートのコースで、それぞれ2, 3種類の中から選べるようになっています。オーストラリアワインをはじめ、いろいろな飲み物が揃っていますが、ワインはグラスでも何種類かいただけます。他の乗客と同席になると、だいたいはみんなでおしゃべりをするようになります。気難しい人と一緒になるとちょっと厄介ですが、大半の人は親しみ易く、話していて楽しかったです。
