Town of Alice Springs

I didn't stay long in town, but it was rather surprising that city centre was clean and modern. It looked cosier than Darwin if you don't care about heat. I suppose the city has sufficient fund for the development and it must rely on economic benefits from tourism.

It was Mbantua Gallery Aboriginal Cultural Museum that I went and see some Aboriginal paintings. The paintings were beautiful and some of them striking. This facility is basically art gallery introducing local artists, but people are able to know about the Aboriginal myth and culture from the exhibits upstairs. It was also nice to be there as we were not annoyed by heat and flies any more.

The guided tour was really interesting, but to tell the truth, it was also hard for me to understand a whole story in English. Fortunately, I was able to make up for my English skill with little knowledge. I haven't been familiar with Australian history and culture, but I somehow had a chance to hear about little of them.

I heard the fact of the Stolen Generations as I had seen "Rabbit-Proof Fence" in a small theatre in Tokyo when it was released. And I also heard that the Australian Government officially made an apology about the child removal policy. And in Tokyo, a large exhibition of Emily Kngwrreye was held last year at The National Art Center, which was spoken quite well. I saw the film because I was interested in music and photography, I heard about the apology probably because I accidentally participated in an English class that the Australian teacher who originally came from Alice Springs taught. Trivia in daily life is sometimes helpful in other places.

あまり長居しませんでしたが、アリス・スプリングス市内はとてもきれいで近代的で、私はそれに驚かされました。暑ささえ気にしなければ、ダーウィンよりも居心地が好さそうだったくらいです。おそらく都市開発に十分な資金がこの町にはあって、きっとそれは観光による経済的利益によるものなのでしょう。

私がアボリジニ・アートを見に行ったのはムバンチュア・ギャラリー（Mbantua Gallery Aboriginal Cultural Museum）というところです。きれいな絵画があり、いくつかは非常に良い作品でした。施設は、基本的にはその地域のアーティストの作品を紹介するギャラリーですが、アボリジニの伝説や文化を2階の展示によって知ることができるようになっています。暑さとハエに悩まされないという点でも良い場所でした。

ガイドツアーは本当に面白かったのですが、正直なところ、英語の説明を全部理解するのは大変でした。幸い、いくらかの豆知識が私のつたない英語力をカバーしてくれました。オーストラリアの歴史や文化にそんなに詳しいわけではないのですが、なぜかいろいろと見聞きすることが多かったからです。

「盗まれた世代」については、『裸足の1500マイル』という映画で知りました。公開されたときに東京の小さな映画館に見に行ったのです。オーストラリア政府がその政策に対して公式謝罪を行ったことも人から聞きました。そして私の住む東京では去年、大規模なエミリー・ウングワレーの展覧会が国立新美術館で開かれ、好評を博しました。映画を見たのは音楽と映像に興味があったからで、公式謝罪のことを知ったのはたまたま参加していた英語の授業の教師がアリス・スプリングス出身のオーストラリア人だったからです。日常生活で得る豆知識ってひょんな時にひょんな所で役に立つものなのですね。
