Katherine Gorge

In the Wet, some nature tours are not available because the place around Katherine River floods. There aren't many options to choose. The boat cruise, which I chose, is one of nature tours operated all year round.

But unfortunately, the weather was bad when I arrived at Katherine station. It was cloudy and rained sometimes. The rain came down heavier when we arrived at the Gorge. Boat crew gave us large plastic bags (usually for throwing rubbish) for preventing our belongings from getting wet, but many women put on instead of a raincoat.

It must have been beautiful if it had been sunny. Katherine Gorge is a part of the Nitmiluk National Park. It follows Katherine River which begins in Kakadu National Park. The waterscape was so clear that trees, rocks and the waterfalls came into our sight. In spite of the weather, it was extremely magnificent.

Or it was more magnificent because of rain. The water level was several meters higher than that in the Dry, and the river went wild. Bats rested on trees. It was the first time that I heard bats crying. Even though the cruise was operated by a powerboat, it bounced time to time. Finally, everybody got soaked in rain and the spray. It annoyed me at first, but I somehow got amused. It was definitely safe, but far more exciting than the Jungle Cruise.

Yet I was cold after I got wet. The bus taking us to the gorge was air-conditioned, and the cold air lost my heat. Everybody getting on the boat seemed the same. We were glad to have a cup of tea at the visitor centre.

I found that Nitmiluk is owned by local Aborigines after the visiting. That reminds me that I saw a lot of Aboriginal people during the tour. I suppose that the proportion of Aborigines in population in Katherine or other towns in Northern Territory is higher than cities in other states.

One thing that I surprised was that some Aboriginal people didn't wear shoes. The bus dropped by a small shopping centre before going back to the station and I saw many people went barefoot there although they put on T-shirts with pants or skirts. Probably, they would drive a car without shoes. I wouldn't surprise if I saw them outside of town or they are on the soil. But it seemed to me the ground sealed with asphalt is too hot to walk. They didn't care, though.

雨季には、キャサリン川(Katherine River)の洪水で周囲が水浸しになるため、キャサリン渓谷(Katherine Gorge)付近の自然探訪ツアーはあまり行われていません。私が選んだボートクルーズは一年中行われているツアーの一つでした。

ですが残念なことに、列車がキャサリンの駅に着いた時、天気は崩れていました。すっかり曇っていて雨が降ったりやんだりしていたのです。雨はツアーバスが渓谷に着いた頃にひどくなってきました。ボートを準備していた人が、荷物を入れるための大きなビニール袋（黒いゴミ袋で、本来は水除けです）を配っていましたが、大半の女性は頭から被ってレインコート代わりにしていました。

天気が良かったらとてもきれいな景色だったと思います。キャサリン渓谷はニトミルック国立公園(Nitmiluk National Park)の一部で、カカドゥ国立公園に端を発するキャサリン側に沿った渓谷です。景色は非常に開けているので、視界の両脇に木々と赤い岩が連なり、ところどころ滝の水が流れ落ちているのが見えます。恵まれない天気にもかかわらず、非常に壮大な景色でした。

でも、もしかしたら雨だったからこそ、より壮大に感じたのかもしれません。乾季のときよりも数メートル高くまで水かさが増し、川の流れは荒くなっていました。コウモリは木の上で休んでいます。私はコウモリが鳴くのをはじめて聞きました。モーターボートに乗っていたのですが、ボートは何度も弾み激しく揺れました。最後には、そのボートに乗っていた人はみんな雨とボートのあげた水しぶきでズブ濡れになってしまったほどです。最初はかなり気分が悪かったのですが、途中でなんとなく面白くなってきました。安全なツアーだけれど、ディズニーランドのシャングル・クルーズよりも格段に面白かったので。

ですがズブ濡れになった後は、寒くて仕方がありませんでした。ツアーバスはエアコンが効いていて、冷房の冷たい風が体温を奪うからです。ボートに乗った人はみんな同じ気分だったようで、その後に寄ったビジター・センターで温かい紅茶を飲めたときは、ほっとしました。

キャサリン渓谷のあるニトミルックの土地はその地域のアボリジニが所有権を持っているということを、私は観光をした後に知りました。それで、そういえばツアー中にアボリジニの人達をたくさん見かけたな、ということを思い出したのです。おそらく人口全体に対するアボリジニの人達の割合は、キャサリンに限らず、ノーザン・テリトリーの町々では多いのではないかと思われます。

そんな彼らを見て驚いたのは、アボリジニの人には靴を履かない人もいるということでした。バスは駅に戻る前に小さなショッピングセンターに寄ったのですが、そこで私は普段着なのに靴だけは履いていないアボリジニの人をたくさん見かけました。おそらく車を運転するときでも裸足なのでしょう。彼らを町の外で見かけていたら、そして歩いているのが土の上だったらそんなに驚かなかったと思います。けれどもアスファルトで舗装された地面なんて、熱すぎて歩けなのではないかと思ったのです。彼らが全く気にしている気配はありませんでした。
