Port Adelaide

I have read on a Japanese guidebook that there is a market on Sunday in Port Adelaide. I actually love to see local markets when I went abroad. Therefore I planned this trip that I could stay Friday and Sunday in Adelaide so as to go to Central Market in city centre and Fisherman's Wharf Market in Port Adelaide. And as I had planned, I went Port Adelaide on Sunday morning.

My friend and I took a commuter train from the station, not knowing the time table. A train going to Port Adelaide runs par an hour, so I had to wait nearly for an hour at the station. However, one we got on, he train arrived at the Port Adelaide station in half an hour. The train and the station of Port Adelaide weren't clean, but the view became beautiful when we were approaching the seaside. It was sunny and cooler than the day before. We saw a lighthouse after about 10 minutes walks, and the next to the lighthouse, a large Market was there.

Market in Port Adelaide is a kind of flea market. People sold antiques, second-hand books, cloths, hand-made accessories, aromatic candles...so on. They were reading a newspaper and relaxed.　They didn't seem care even though the customer didn't come. I bought reasonable hand-made earrings at one of the stalls.

Accidentally, I came across an Australian couple whom I talked on The Ghan at the market. We talked little about where we went in Adelaide and said goodbye. The market had nothing special, but it was fun to look around.

私が読んだ日本語のガイドブックには、日曜日にポート・アデレード(Port Adelaide)で開かれるマーケットのことが書いてありました。旅行の際にその地域のマーケットに行くと結構楽しいので、とても興味をそそられました。そのためこの旅行では、セントラル・マーケットとポート・アデレードのフィッッシャーマンズ・ワーフ(Fisherman's Wharf)で行われるマーケットに行くために、アデレードに金曜と日曜に滞在できるように計画を練っていました。そして予定通り、日曜の朝にポート・アデレードに行きました。

友人と私は、駅から近郊線に乗ることにしました。ポート・アデレードに向かう電車は1時間に1本くらいしかなかったのですが、私たちは時刻表もチェックせずに駅に向かったため、30分近く駅で待つ羽目に陥りました。ですが電車に乗ってからはあっという間で、30分ほどで目的地に着きました。電車もポート・アデレードの駅もあまりきれいではありませんでしたが、海辺に行くにしたがって感じの良い街並みになってきました。天気も良く、その前の日までとは比べ物にならないくらい涼しかったです。10分程歩くと、灯台が見えてきて、その隣に大きなフィッシャーマンズ・ワーフ・マーケットがありました。

ポート・アデレードのマーケットは、フリー・マーケットのような感じです。骨董品、中古の本、洋服、ハンドメイドのアクセサリー、アロマキャンドルなどを売っていました。出店している人達は、お客が来ようが来まいが気にしていないようで、新聞を読みながら座っている人も結構いました。私はそうした店の一つで、手作りのピアスを買いました。ものすごく欲しかったわけではないのですが、安かったし、旅の記念に良いかと思ったのです。

そういえば、このマーケットを散策中、偶然ザ・ガンで一緒だったオーストラリア人のご夫婦に再会しました。少しお話をしてすぐに別れましたが、ほんの数日前のことが懐かしく思えました。マーケット自体は特別なものではありませんが、いろいろ見て回るのは面白かったです。
