North Adelaide

The City of Adelaide is divided into two areas by River Torrens. The south side is city centre, where there are many public buildings such as town hall, GPO and museums and station. Our accommodation was also there (as it used be the Treasury). On the other hand, the north side called North Adelaide is residential area.

We drove around this area when we went back from Cleland Wildlife Park in order to look for a restaurant to have dinner. Streets formed a grid as well as city centre and lovely parks are laid out in this area. It was really quiet and looked very peaceful, and it reminds me of city residential area in England.

The main street is O'Connell Street which continues to the King William Street at city centre. On the street, tens of cafés and restaurants stand in a row. I have heard the number of restaurants per capita in Adelaide is the largest in Australia, but I wondered if they all kept on business at the same time in such small city when I saw those restaurants.

Anyway, we chose one restaurant (I'm going to write about it later) in the street and had dinner. It was almost 8 o'clock when we left there, but it was before sunset. We passed the St. Peter's Cathedral and the river on our way back. It was nice view and seemed comfortable to walk around so that I decided to go there next morning.

アデレードの街はトレンズ川(River Torrens)をはさんで二つの地域に分かれています。南側が市街地で、市庁舎や中欧郵便局、博物館、駅といった公共施設があります。私たちもこちら側に泊まったほうです（なにしろ財務省跡なので）。一方北側は、ノース・アデレード(North Adelaide)と呼ばれ、住宅地になっています。

私たちがノース・アデレードに立ち寄ったのは、クリーランド自然保護公園からの帰りで、この辺りのレストランで夕食を取ろうかと思ったのです。道路は南側同様、格子状に整備されていて、その間にいくつか公園があります。とても静かで平和そうで、イギリスの住宅街を思い起こさせます。

メイン・ストリートはオコンネル・ストリート（O'Connell Street）といい、南側のメイン・ストリートであるキング・ウィリアム・ストリートにつながっています。この通りには何十件もの飲食店が連なっています。オーストラリア国内の都市の中で、最も人口あたりのレストランの数が多いのがアデレードだということを聞いてはいたものの、この状況を見て本当に全部の店の商売が成り立っているかと不思議に思ったものです。

ともかく、沢山あるレストランの中から一ヶ所選び（これについては、後で書きたいと思います）、夕食を取りました。レストランを出たのは8時近くでしたが、まだ日は暮れていませんでした。車に乗って帰る途中、セント・ピーターズ大聖堂(St. Peter's Cathedral)と川を通り過ぎました。とても良い景色で居心地も良さそうだったので、翌日このあたりを散歩しよう、と思ったのでした。
