Litchfield National Park

I swear my friend kept legal speed, which was 80-130 km/h depending of place, so we passed through Batchelor, a small town located next to the park area, about an hour after we left Darwin. We however continued driving for nearly 20 km to get to the entrance, and for 60 km to cross the national park.

We rented a small (2 wheel drive) car, as the visitor centre staff told us that we didn't have to take 4WD. It might be true because sealed roads run even in the park. Yet, you must feel uncomfortable when it rains. Naturally, it rains sometime in a day during the wet season. No one can help it. And roads seem to flood easily in the Northern Territory whether they are sealed or not.

Rain disturbs our way, but it also brings green to this dry land. After the shower, bush looked livelier and more beautiful. Bush stretched around us when we drove through the park. I saw large termite mounds along the way and sometimes wallabies appeared somewhere from the bush.

One of the main attractions in the Lichfield National Park is waterfalls. People can swim even during the Wet. I didn't want to and I didn't, but I was amazed when I just saw the waterfalls. Waterfalls in the Wet are completely different from the picture in the guidebooks or postcards. Increase of the volume of water makes the flow faster and more dynamic.

It was prohibited to swim in Wangi Falls when I went there. It was reasonable because the water came just beneath the deck. Many plants and trees were deluged. On the other hand, we saw beautiful scenery at Florence Falls. I think it is one of the most magnificent views in the park. There was nice nature trail around there, but unfortunately we couldn't pass through as it was drowned.

もちろん法定速度（このハイウェイでは、80-130km/hくらい）を守って運転したので、国立公園の手前にある小さな町、バッチェラー(Batchelor)には1時間ちょっとでつきました。ですが、それから公園の入口まで約20kmあり、公園内を横切るのにはあと60km走ることになります。ビジター・センターの人が4WDを借りる必要なんてない、と言ったので、私達が借りたのは小さな車（カローラでした）でした。確かに公園内の道路も舗装されている部分もかなりあるため、小さな車で大丈夫なのでしょうが、雨の日にこの車では少々頼りない気がします。仕方のないことですが、雨季の間は一日のどこかで雨が降ります。そしてノーザン・テリトリーの道路は、舗装されていようがいまいが、すぐに水浸しになってしまうようでした。

移動するときは不便な雨ですが、乾燥しきった土地に潤いと緑をもたらすのもまた雨です。通り雨のような雨のあと、林は生き生きとしてきれいに見えてきました。走っている道路の周りには林が広がっていました。道すがら所々に大きなシロアリのアリ塚があり、時々ワラビーが顔を出しているのが見えました。

リッチフィールド国立公園の見所の一つがいくつかの滝です。雨季であっても泳ぐことができる場所もあります。泳ぎたいとも思わなかったのでしませんでしたが、滝を見たときはちょっと感動しました。雨季の滝の姿はガイドブックや絵ハガキの写真にあるような乾季の姿とは全く違っていたからです。水量が多いために、滝の流れはより早く、ダイナミックでした。

訪れた時、ワンギ・フォールズ(Wangi Falls)は遊泳禁止になっていました。デッキのすぐ下まで水が達している状態で、木々や草は殆ど水没していました。泳げないのは尤もなことだと思います。もう一つの大きな滝、フローレンス・フォールズ（Florence Falls）からの景色はとてもきれいで、個人的には公園内でも最も美しい景色の一つではないかと思います。この滝の周りには感じの良い散策路があったのですが、残念ながら小路が水浸しになっていたために、私たちは歩くことができませんでした。
