Going to Adelaide

From Australia (2009-02)

The Ghan was about to leave when we arrived at the station.

Many people were on board from Alice Springs so that the lounge were bit crowded before lunch and tables in a restaurant were almost full at lunch time. I think many people use The Ghan as transportation between Alice Springs to Adelaide. Actually, the scenery dramatically changes during the route and there are some things to see along the railway.

Finke River is one of them. It is said the oldest river in the world. It is true the Central Australia is one of the oldest lands on Earth. The source the river is in MacDonnell Ranges which I have seen. The ground was so dry that I didn't see the flow, but pond-like water remained.

I became feeling comfortable on the train. I began to understand what the train journey is like and passengers started to talk to me even if they didn't share a table with me. Probably, they finally realised we can communicate in English and I clearly looked better than the day before. I got use to speak in English (probably because I have got a compliment about it in the morning) and felt less stressful when I was going to say something. Trivial conversations with other passengers or attendants, cold beer after a tour, nice meal with a bottle of white wine recommended by an attendant, magnificent view..., I don't remember every single detail, but I was really fun.

Speaking of scenery, I have to tell you about night sky. I saw it from the compartment window when I wake up at midnight. The train was bumpy at night in the second day. Anyway, thousands of stars were there. These stars were unfamiliar to me but I could see where the Milky Way lied. It was so dark that nothing was seen on the ground. Instead, stars twinkled all over the sky and they are seen just above the horizon. It was amazing.

ツアーが終わって駅に着いたとき、列車は出発しようとしていました。

たくさんの人がアリス・スプリングスから乗車したため昼食前のラウンジは混雑しており、食堂車のテーブルもほとんど満席になりました。ザ・ガンを使う人はアリス・スプリングスとアデレード間の移動に使うことが多いようです。確かに、その間の景色は大きく劇的に変化しますし、見どころもたくさんあります。

フィンク川もそのうちの一つです。これは世界でもっとも古い川と云われているものです。中央オーストラリアは地球上でもっとも古い土地であると言われているのは本当のことです。川の水源は、私が訪れたマクドネル山脈にあるそうです。地面が非常に乾いていたため、水の流れを見ることができませんでしたが、小さな池のように水が残っていました。

この頃になると列車での生活が快適になってきました。列車の旅というものがどういうものだか、なんとなくわかってきましたし、他の乗客が（食堂車で一緒のテーブルにつかなかった人でも）、話しかけてくるようになったからです。多分ですが、その頃にはようやく彼らも、友人と私が英語を話すことに気づいたし、私も明らかに前の日よりは具合が良さそうだったからなのでしょう。ようやく英語で話すことにも慣れてきて（午前中に他の人に褒められたからだと思います）、何かを言おうとしたときに感じるストレスが少なくなったからだと思います。他の乗客や乗務員とのくだらない会話、ツアーの後の冷たいビール、おすすめの白ワインと一緒にいただいた夕食、壮大な景色・・・すべてを事細かに覚えているわけではありませんが、本当に楽しかったです。

景色といえば、列車から見た夜空の話をしなくてなりません。夜中に目が覚めて、個室の窓から夜空を眺めました。二日目の夜は列車が激しく揺れたのです。そこには数えきれないほどたくさんの星がありました。南半球の星には馴染みがありませんでしたが、天の川ははっきりと見えました。外は真っ暗で、地面で見えるものはありませんでしたが、星は夜空一面にまたたき、水平線近くまで達していたのです。本当に綺麗でした。
