From Katherine to Alice Springs

From Australia (2009-02)

When I went back to my compartment after diner, a double-deck bed had been set. I lied down a bed as soon as I went back. Unexpectedly it was really comfortable. I fell asleep soon because I was tired when I went to Katherine. The train seemed to run smoothly when it headed to Alice Springs. I slept heavily that night.
Next morning, I woke up without an alarm clock. It was around 6 o'clock and the sun hadn't risen yet. The scenery outside of the window had been changed, when I draw up a blind. Taller trees were disappeared and less plant was seen. We saw red soil spreading to the horizon. I saw such a long horizon for first time in my life. I have no idea when it has been changed, but it was definitely sure that I crossed the border of the "Top End" and the "Red Centre" during the night.
I got dressed quickly and went to the lounge car to see a sunrise. A few people had already been there. I poured a cup of tea myself and sat on a sofa to wait. The sky was getting brighter, and finally...I saw the sun rising from the skyline. It was outstandingly amazing. (It was hard to describe how amazing, so that I post the picture with this.) To me, it was probably the biggest event on The Ghan.
When the main event had been over, I somehow became hungry. I remembered that I hadn't eaten enough because of sickness the day before. And a cup of tea made me work up my appetite, I guess.
Every single meal on the train was fabulous, but my favourite was breakfast. Basically, English-style breakfast is gorgeous so that I'd really love to have it. Breakfast in The Ghan wasn't the exception, and it was wonderful to eat seeing the nice view in the sunshine. I could imagine the outside was extremely hot seeing the bright sunshine, but in an air-conditioned room, it was refreshing.

夕食後個室に戻ると、二段ベッドができあがっていました。戻った途端に試しに横になってみたのですが、意外に快適なベッドでした。キャサリンに行った時に結構疲れていたようで、すぐに眠ってしまいました。列車はアリス・スプリングスに向かっている時は殆ど揺れもなく走っていたようです。その日はとても深く眠ることができました。
翌朝は目覚まし時計なしで目が覚めました。6時頃で、まだ太陽も出ていませんでした。ブラインドを上げると、窓の外の景色が変わっていました。高い木々はなくなっていて、草もあまり見られません。赤土の地面が水平線まで広がっていました。あんなに長い水平線を見るのは生まれて初めてのことでした。景色がいつ変わったのか想像もつきませんが、夜のうちに「トップ・エンド」から「レッド・センター」を越したことは確かでした。
私はすぐに着替えて、日の出を見にラウンジカーに行きました。2，3人の乗客がすでに来ていました。私は紅茶を一杯用意してソファーに座り、しばらく待ちました。空は次第に明るくなり、そしてついに水平線から太陽が昇るのが見えてきたのです。それは筆舌に尽くしがたい光景でした。（だからせめて、ここでは写真を掲載しておきます。）おそらく私にとってはザ・ガンでの一番印象深い出来事だったと思います。
日の出を見終えたら、なんとなくお腹がすいてきました。前日に具合が悪かったせいであまりものを食べていないことを思い出しました。たぶん1杯の紅茶が食欲を刺激したんだと思います。
列車での食事はどれも素晴らしかったのですが、私が一番気に入っていたのが朝食でした。基本的にイギリス風の朝食は豪勢なので大好きなのです。ザ・ガンでの朝食もそんな感じでしたし、太陽の光が射す中で素晴らしい景色を見ながら食事を取るのは本当に素敵なことでした。外を見ていれば、かなり暑いというのがわかりましたが、エアコンが効いている部屋の中では気持ち良く感じられたのです。
