Emily Gap and Jessie Gap

My tour coach came last. The tour I participated was named "Aboriginal Sacred Site". The operator took us to Emily Gap and Jessie Gap where aborigine called the Arrente thought sanctuaries, and then we went to Anzac Hill to see the panoramic (it was literally true) view of Alice Springs. We also saw Aboriginal arts in town and finally we talked with the guide and other participants at a restaurant having a cup of coffee.

It seemed less popular than other tours when we were taking the train. Only 6 people were on a car including the driver and a guide at that time. But I have to say the guide who is Aborigine brought up in Alice Springs was really nice.

I found later that Emily Gap and Jessie Gap is a part of East MacDonnell Range and they aren't far from Alice Springs city centre. (One of the most crucial disadvantages of guided tours is that tourists don't remember where exactly they have been....) MacDonnell Range is a series of mountains, but it is more likely to been seen as huge ochre rocks, which was quite different from mountains that I knew. It is no wonder that people have believed it used be a caterpillar.

私の参加するツアーのバスが最後にやってきました。ツアーの名前は「アボリジニの聖地(Ablriginal Sacred Site)」というものです。ツアーではます、エミリー・ギャップ(Emily Gap)とジェシー・ギャップ(Jessie Gap)という、アラント(Arrente)というその地域のアボリジニが聖域としている場所に行き、次にアンザック・ヒル(Anzac Hill)という高台でアリス・スプリングスを展望します。また町ではアボリジニ・アートを見て、最後にレストランでガイドの人や他のツアー参加者とお茶を飲みながら話をしました。

このツアーは同じ列車に乗った人達にはあまり人気がなかったようで、バスには運転手とガイド、そして乗客が4人と、合計6人しかいませんでした。ですが、アリス・スプリングスで生まれ育ったというアボリジニのガイドさんは、とても良い人でした。

後でわかったのですが、エミリー・ギャップとジェシー・ギャップは東マクドネル山脈(East MacDonnell Range)の一部で、そこは比較的アリス・スプリングスの中心部にも近いところであいた。（ガイドツアーの致命的な欠点は、参加者が、自分達がどこに行ったのかがよくわからないことです。）マクドネル山脈は、山脈というよりは巨大な土色の岩に見え、それは私の知っている山とはかなり違うものでした。昔の人々が、それが巨大な芋虫だったと信じるのも不思議ではない感じでした。
