Travel to Australia

I had thought that I was going to Europe next time I went abroad...until I heard there was a train cross the continent in Australia.

The train is called The Ghan. It runs on single-track railway between Adelaide and Darwin twice a week. It passes through "the Red Centre", the central desert area, takes 2 and half days to the final stop.

Generally, taking a long vacation is difficult for ordinary Japanese employees like me. I think I have adequate income, but it isn't enough to spend much for leisure. In a level-headed manner, the train journey is time-consuming and the fare isn't reasonable to me.

I, however, decided to indulge myself this time, even though my manager was uptight about my absence, and even though my savings are decreased in such pessimistic economic situation. Never mind. Money comes and goes (in this case, it goes and I expect to come, though).

I was headed to Darwin, Australia on January 31 and went back from Adelaide on February 10. It was just a 9 day trip, but I enjoyed very much because travelling 3,000 km on the ground was extremely fascinating.

次に海外旅行に行くならヨーロッパにしよう、とずっと思っていたのですが、ある日テレビでオーストラリアを縦断する列車のことを特集していて、それからオーストラリアに行って、それに乗ってみたいと思うようになりました。

それはザ・ガン(The Ghan)という名前で、南オーストラリア州の州都であるアデレードとノーザン・テリトリーの州都、ダーウィンの間を週に二回走る単線の列車です。「レッド・センター」と呼ばれる中央オーストラリアの砂漠地帯を抜け、2日半かけて終点に向かいます。

私のような普通の会社員にとっては、長期休暇を取るのが難しいし、年相応の収入があると思われても、余暇のために目一杯お金を使うほどはない、というのが正直なところです。冷静に考えると、列車の旅というのは時間もかかるし、費用も決して安くはないのでした。

ですが今回は敢えて、自分に甘くなることにしました。上司が休暇取得に対して渋い顔をしようと、こんな経済状況の中で自分の貯えが目減りしようと、気にすまい、と。金は天下の回りものですから。

そんなわけで私は、1月31日にダーウィンへ発ち、2月10日にアデレードから帰るというスケジュールで9日間のオーストラリア旅行を決行したのです。おそらく他の国の人からみれば短期間のせかせかとした旅行にしか見えないでしょうが、3000kmもの距離を、飛行機を使わずに地面の上を移動するというのは本当に面白い体験で、私自身は十分に満足したのでした。
