Travel to Egypt: Introduction
It was January 2005 that I visited Egypt.
At that time, I had been interested in visiting Egypt very much since my cousin had taken a package tour of Egypt a year ago. Just then, on the beginning of December as far as I remember, a friend of mine who had been traveling (literally) around the world asked me if I could join a part of his journey in Egypt. I hesitated at first, but finally I accepted his offer. I just thought, I wouldn't have been there if I had missed this opportunity.
It was difficult for me to arrange my holiday. I couldn't take a long vacation as I was studying in a university and working in an office at the same time. There was no choice but going Egypt during the New Year holidays although an air fare was very expensive.
The worst thing is that I couldn't take enough time for preparation, which I usually spend much time to examine the culture, history and geography of where I go.
My journey started January 1 and stayed in Egypt for 7 days. I only had vague impression about Egypt, which reminded of ruins like pyramids, artifacts in museums and a new library of Alexandria, for example. I decided to see mainly Cairo, and in addition, I visited Alexandria as I also liked the history of ancient Greece and Rome.
その前年に従姉妹がツアーで行った話を聞いてから、エジプト旅行に対してとても興味があった時期でした。折しも世界一周をすると言って海外を放浪している友人から、冬休みを利用してエジプトで合流しないかと誘われました。最初は躊躇していたのですが、結局誘いに応じることに。これを逃したら多分一生エジプトなんて行かないだろうな、となんとなく思ってしまったのです。
休暇を取って旅行するのは当時の私には難しいことでした。大学院に行きながら仕事をしていたのです。やむなく年始休暇に休みを足して、大学の冬期休暇の期間を利用して旅行することになりました。年末は運賃が格段に高くて、金銭的にも辛かったのを覚えています。自分にとって最も残念だったのは、旅の準備を十分にできなかったことでした。普段だったら念入りにその土地の文化や歴史、地理を下調べして行く性質なので。
1月1日からエジプト滞在7日間の旅で、その時のエジプトへの印象は、ピラミッド等の古代遺跡と博物館の考古遺物、それにアレキサンドリアの新図書館といった漠然としたものしかないままでした。だから行きたい場所もカイロとアレクサンドリアくらいしか思い浮かず、その二都市を旅することにしたのでした。
