Museum of Mohamed Khalil (マハムード・カリール美術館)

I had seen lots of unfamiliar architectures such as ruins of Ancient Egypt and Islamic architectures since I arrived in Egypt. I spontaneously sensed that the culture was completely different from where I lived and where I had been. I got totally overwhelmed, and honestly, I didn't know how to deal with my cultural shock at that time.

I didn't have any problems with foods, but I just wanted to see something familiar to my daily life. That's why I visited the Museum of Mohamed Khalil . This museum is an art gallery located in the riverside of central Cairo. The building itself is used be a palace of Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Pasha, Egyptian politician in the middle of 20th century, and the collection also belonged to the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Pasha and his wife Emiline. They had studied in Paris and loved fine arts popular in that period. It consists of sculptures of Rodin, pictures of Gauguin, Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh, and Asian porcelains.

It was strange to see a European palace with beautiful garden along the Nile, however, I felt comfortable to be there as it was familiar than Islamic architectures. I enjoyed seeing the collection and the Nile view which was especially wonderful through the window. Some Egyptian visitors were there, but I didn't see any tourists. Probably, tourists who come from foreign countries hardly expect to see European fine art in Egypt.

By the way, months ago when I revised my post about Egypt, I saw that Van Gogh had stolen from the museum on the website. I was little shocked by the news as I have been there, but at the same time, I thought it was no wonder as it didn't seem to have any anti-theft system. I was very sorry that I found the Egyptian government didn't care about this small museum.

エジプトに来てからというもの、古代遺跡やイスラム建築など、普段見慣れない建造物をたくさん見てきて、ここは自分が住んでいるところや今までに訪れたところとは全く異なる文化を持った国なのだということを自然と感じるようなりました。すっかり圧倒されてしまい、正直なところこのカルチャー・ショックとどう向き合えば良いのかわからなくなっていたのです。

食事に関しては全く大丈夫だったのですが、自分の普段の生活に近いものを何か見たいなと思い、それでマハムード・カリール美術館に行ってみました。この美術館はカイロの中心部、ナイルの河岸にあります。20世紀中頃のエジプトの政治家マハムード・カリール(Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Pasha)の邸宅だったところで、コレクションも彼とその妻エミリーンが収集したものでした。彼らはパリに留学していたことがあり、その頃流行だった美術品を好みました。ロダンの彫刻や、絵画ではゴーギャン、モネ、ルノアール、ゴッホ等のフランス近代絵画、そして東洋の陶磁器などがコレクションに含まれています。

ナイル川沿いに庭園つきのヨーロッパ風邸宅を見るのは奇妙な感じがするのですが、私にとっては少なくともイスラム建築によりは身近なので、居心地が良かったです。美術品はもちろん、窓から見えるナイル川の眺望も楽しめました。何人かのエジプト人がここを訪れていましたが、観光客らしき人は全く見かけませんでした。外国からエジプトに来る人は、ここでヨーロッパ絵画なんか見ようとも思わない、ということでしょう。

そういえば、この記事を書き直した数ヵ月前に、この美術館からゴッホの絵が盗まれたというニュースを読みました。一度行った場所だから少なからずショックだったのだけれど、それと同時にさもありなん、と思ったものです。盗難対策が取られているとは思えなかったので。エジプト政府はこの小さな美術館のことをあまり気にしていないということが分かるようで、残念な思いがします。
