Going to Giza (ギザへ)
I went to see pyramid complexes on the 2nd day in Cairo. Giza, where famous three pyramids had built, is located over 20 km far from the central Cairo. So people get there usually by a car because there isn't alternate transportation, which is really difficult to get around for independent travellers.
I'm going to tell you why. Firstly, local buses are unfriendly for foreigners who don't understand Arabic. There isn't any sign or description in alphabet as I mentioned on former article, so that we are not able to see the destination. In addition, buses usually don't stop at all stops, so that tourists hardly find where we get on and off. Locals were accustomed the way it went and they run after the moving vehicle in the middle of busy streets and caught the bus. It really scared me.
And secondly, getting taxi is also stressful. There are 2 kinds of taxi in Egypt, licensed and unlicensed. If you take a licensed taxi, probably the fare is more expensive than that of unlicensed, or than the fare local people pay. Actually, many guidebooks advise tourists to haggle over the fare before getting on. It is less expensive if you take unlicensed car, but it might happen that the driver takes you to a souvenir shop nothing to do with your request.
We took a taxi from a hotel. I didn't care if it was little more expensive than reasonable fare, but my friend argued with the driver because he really liked bargaining. Their argument made me nervous actually, but nearly an hour later, we reached near the entrance of the pyramid complexes.
カイロ滞在２日目に、ピラミッドを見に行きました。有名なピラミッドが築かれているギザ(Giza)はカイロ中心部から20kmほど離れたところですが、交通機関が発達していないためだいたいの人は車でそこに向かいます。これが個人旅行者には結構辛いのです。
なぜかというと、第一にアラビア語が分からない外国人観光客にとって、ローカルバスは乗りづらいということが理由に挙げられます。すでに触れたように、行先を含めアルファベットのサインというものが皆無で、まず行先がわかりません。それに停留所に止まるバスというのがあまりなく、観光客にとってはどこで乗ってどこで降りれば良いのか、ほぼ分からないのです。地元の人はこういう運行状況に慣れているようで、車の往来の激しい道路の真ん中で走り続けるバスを追いかけて乗り込んでいます。これが見るからに恐ろしい。
二つめの理由としては、タクシーへの乗車も結構ストレスを感じさせるということが挙げられます。エジプトには免許を持ったタクシーと、無免許のもの、いわゆる白タクの両方が、ほぼ公然と存在しています。免許のある普通のタクシーに乗ると、白タクよりも高くて、しかも観光客と判断されるや否や地元の人に請求する額よりふっかけられます。白タクだとそれよりは安いけれど、伝えた行先と関係なく土産物店などに連れて行かれる、などということもあったりします。
私達は、というと、それでもタクシーに乗りました。個人的には正当な料金よりも多少高くてもそんなに気にしなかったのですが、交渉好きな友人は、元気に運転手と言い合っていました。それを聞いている方は心配になってきていたのですが、ともかく1時間弱でピラミッド群の入口に着くことができました。
