Crossing the Nile on foot(ナイル川を徒歩で渡る)

I occasionally saw the Nile. I knew this river was the longest in the world, but I hadn't recognized how wide it was. It is impossible to see such wide river as long as people live in a small insular country like Japan.

The rain stopped when I left the Museum of Mohamed Khalil. It hadn't been dark yet, so that we decided to cross the river on foot. I wanted to avoid getting taxi even though I got tired of walking around. We had crossed the river by a taxi when we visited Giza, and I thought it wasn't a big deal as I didn't remember how long it took to cross.

We took the route to Sharaton Cairo Hotel at first, and walked in Al Tahrir (the street leading to the Tahrir Square). When we crossed the first bridge for 5 minutes, we reached a large riverbank called Gezira Island. Our route was in the south side of the island, so that I saw Cairo Tower and the Cairo Opera House on the left-hand side.

When I saw the Opera House, I remember a taxi driver said that Japanese built the Opera when we told we were Japanese. I imagined that a Japanese architect or a construction company involved in the project when I heard of it, but the truth is that the Egyptian government built it with financial assistance of Japanese Government as a result of President Mubarak's visit to Japan in 1983. Although I was little when it was constructed, I was slightly shocked by my ignorance. I mean, that was where I realised a large number of Japanese people including I don't clearly understand where the national budget goes.

But I digress. To get back to my story in Cairo, Gezira Island was apparently affluent area in the city. It was tidier than downtown area and lots of modern neat buildings, plants and trees stood along the street. It was the same when I went to the north area called Zamalek the next day looking for a spice shop. There were a lot of boutiques, cafes and restaurants in the streets, and I nearly forgot that I was in Egypt.

Crossing this riverbank took more time than I expected, and what is more, the east-side bridge of the riverbank was longer than the west-side one. It was a long way so that I could hardly believe it wasn't the mouth of the river. When I reached the east side, the sun set in where I came from . It was very beautiful.

滞在中折に触れてナイル川を見ることはありました。この川が世界で一番長いということは分かっていましたが、それがどの程度の広さなのかを認識したことがありませんでした。日本のような小さな島国に住んでいる限り、こんなに長くて広い川を拝むことはないからです。

マハムード・カリール美術館を出た時には雨が止んでいました。まだ日が暮れてもいなかったので歩いてナイル川を渡ることにしました。歩き回って疲れていたのですが、タクシーに乗るのは避けたかったのです。

ギザに行くときにタクシーで川を渡ったのですが、その時どのくらいかかったのか全く覚えていませんでした。美術館からシェラトン・カイロのところまで北上し、そのあとタハリール通り(Al Tahrir)を歩きます。5分ほどかけて橋を渡ると、ゲジーラ島(Gezira Island)と呼ばれる中州に辿りつきます。私達が歩いたのはこの島の南側で、歩いている途中でカイロ・タワー(Cairo Tower)やオペラハウス(Cairo Opera House)が左手に見えました。

オペラハウスを見ていたら、タクシーに乗った時に運転手に自分たちが日本人だと言ったら、オペラハウスを指して、これは日本人が作ったのだと言っていたことを思い出しました。その時は日本人の建築家かゼネコンか何かが建設に携わったのだろうと思っていたのですが、後になって実はこのオペラハウスが1983年にムバラク大統領が来日した折に、エジプト政府が日本政府の資金援助を取りつけて建設したということを知り、それまで全く知らなかったというのに少しばかりショックを受けました。何と言うか、自分を含めほとんどの日本人が日本の国家予算の用途を理解していないということに、この時改めて気付かされたのです。

話が逸れてしまいましたが、このゲジーラ島は富裕層の人達が生活する場のようです。下町よりも整然としているし、近代的で小ぎれいな建物、木々や植物も立っています。ザマレク(Zamalek)という北側のエリアにもその翌日に香辛料のお店を探しに出かけたのですが、いくつものブティックやレストラン、カフェなどが立ち並んでいて、エジプトにいるような気がしなかったくらいでした。

この中州を渡るのだけでも思ったよりも時間がかかったし、東側の橋は西側よりも遥かに長かったのです。あまりに歩く距離が長くて、ここがナイル川の河口でないというのが信じ難いほどでした。東河岸に辿り着いた時には、自分が来た方に太陽が沈もうとしていました。とてもきれいな夕暮れでした。
