Arriving at Cairo (カイロ到着)
The plane arrived at the Terminal 1 of the Cairo Airport at night.
Tourists from Japan except who have already got, have to buy a visa as well as to change money before you go through a passport control. We can buy both at the currency exchange windows. Tourist visa is like a stamp, and tourists put it on their passports for themselves. It was very simple and cheaper than processing application before visiting Egypt because I didn't prepare any documents and pay the charge.
A few currency exchange windows opened, they seemed to refuse to buy Yen even though Japanese tourists asked them to exchange to Egyptian pound. I had prepared US dollars as I have heard that some windows deal with dollars, (British) pounds and Euros, so that I easily change my money.
I walked out the airport after passing customs and the passport control. To my surprise, there were a lot of people at the entrance although it was almost 11 pm. They are mostly male Egyptian (as it is the Muslim country, basically). Some of them came to the airport to pick up some tourists, but the other were taxi drivers or private travel agent looking for tourists. Their sales pitch was so intense that it made me really scared. Luckily, I found my friend who was going to pick me up sooner.
We took a bus in order to go to Cairo city centre. As well as other international airports, airport shuttle buses are available in Cairo, but they had no sign of English, but Arabic. My friend asked local people near the bus asked the destination using small English words, and got on one of them. It waited other passengers for a while, and then left the airport.
It was a local bus that we took. It was shabby and dusty, and had one door beside a driver's seat. people pay the fare when a guy who gets on the bus with a driver either came to their seat. He gives us a piece of paper instead of the fare, which was a ticket even if it didn't look like.
We apparently got on the right bus, but we got off next to our destination. Eventually, my friend took a taxi and we went to Midan Tahrir, a major public square in central Cairo. Frankly speaking, I would have never done such thing if I were alone. The first day in Cairo was really hard for me.

すでに手続き済の人を除いて日本からの観光客は、入国審査を受ける前に両替と一緒にビザを購入しなくてはいけません。どちらも両替窓口で取り扱っています。エジプトの観光ビザは切手みたいで、それを観光目的で来た人達は各自のパスポートに貼るようになっています。書類も手数料もいらないので、事前に申請するよりも簡単で安いです。
両替カウンターは2,3箇所しか開いておらず、しかもどの窓口でも日本円からエジプトポンドへの両替を断っているようでした。町で日本円を取り扱う両替場所が少ないと聞いていたので私は行く前に米ドルを用意しており、そのため両替で苦労することはありませんでした。
税関と入国審査を通り、空港の外に出ました。驚いたことに、夜の11時になろうとしているのにもかかわらず、出入口にはたくさんの人が待ち構えていました。ほとんどがエジプト人男性（何しろイスラム教国だから）です。何人かはツアーの観光客を空港に迎えに来た人ですが、その他は観光客を呼び込むタクシー運転手や仲介業者です。彼らの客引きがあまりに熱心で、ちょっと恐怖を感じました。幸い、迎えに来てくれた友人をすぐに見つけられたので良かったのですけれど。
空港からカイロ市内へ行くのには、バスを使いました。他の国際空港同様、空港にはシャトルバスが乗り入れているのですが、アラビア語表記はあれども英語表記は見当たりません。友人がバスの近くにいた地元の人に片言の英語で行先を聞き、それでそのうちの一つに乗り込みました。バスはしばらくの間他の客を待っていましたが、その後空港を出て行きました。
乗ったバスはローカルバスでした。ボロボロで、埃っぽく、観光バスのように運転席の横に一つドアがあるのみで、そこから乗客は乗り降りします。運転手の他にもう一人乗務員がいて、乗客が席に着くと料金を徴収しにやって来ます。料金を払うと代わりに薄い紙きれを渡してくれるのですが、これが（そう呼べるかどうかはともかく）チケット代わりです。
行先は間違っていなかったようですが、目的地の一つ手前で降りてしまい、結局はそこからタクシーに乗ってタハリール広場(Midan Tahrir, カイロの中心部にある大きな広場)まで行くことになりました。率直に言うと、一人で旅行していたら絶対こんなことはしなかったと思います。カイロ滞在一日目にして厳しい洗礼を受けた気分でした。
